I remember the first time I ascended to Market st from the Embacadero BART station in SF, I was struck at how the Financial District reminded me of the Financial District of Seattle. But then again, I felt that San Diegos downtown reminded me of Seattle, I suppose most modern financial districts tend to resemble each other. Seattle to me kinda feels like a more sprawling and less dense version of San Francisco. Both cities have lots of various types of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, both have lots of hills, both have funky 'hoods with similar vibes, and both are surrounded by lots of water. The U-district also reminds me of Berkeley a lot.

SEATTLE. There are steep streets like in SF, there is the water nearby and some areas of the town look like San Francisco. Whenever I go over there it reminds me of visiting San Francisco.

Cable Cars --- Street Cars

Golden Gate/Oakland Bay Bridge --- Crescent City Connections Bridges
Seafood (dungeness crab) --- Seafood (blue crab, crawfish, oyster, and shrimp)
Molinari's Deli --- Central Grocery (Italian Deli/Muffaletta)
Sourdough Bread --- Beignets (Cafe Du Monde)
Victorian Architecture --- French Quarter Architecture (much older)
Gay/Lesbian population --- Gay/Lesbian population (mostly in the Quarter)
Homeless --- Homeless (mostly in the Quarter again)
There's probably more, but I think those are the main points.

I found that S.F. Looks very similar to Seattle and Boston.
Also, the vast majority of people that welcome the ''San Francisco'' stereotype, did not grow up there.
An adopted stance to make them feel superior to where they're from and comfortable in their new life.
My friends and I love going to new cities, be it the south, mid-west,east. We are wise not to expect everyone to think like us or respect San Francisco like we do.

Mountains in Sydney are only 1 hour (train ride) West, 3 sisters are right outside of Penrith (Blue Mountains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Mo...28Australia%29)
The rocky beaches, bays, somewhat hilly downtown and walkable (funky) Queen street are why I think Sydney is closest to SF that I have seen. The Rocks is sort of like the Marina too.
Bondi Beach (Sydney) - Yes I have surfed this it was great
And I agree with the racial tension there, even the dark haired Spainards and Italians I met there said they field racist remarks.
I don't recall any homeless there, but plenty of poor 20yr olds living on couches, from all over the world.

Philadelphia downtown looks very similar, Outer Richmond and Sunset look like the Northeast. When I see those green and cream colored PTC (Philadelphia Transit) "F" Trolleys on Market I'm home
