Unhappy in New York - Relocating.. where?
Hello,
I am new on this forum, after 5 years spent in NYC I am thinking
of moving out based on many factors:
- its not an "easy city": super fast, super expensive, the weather
is a big deal (crazy cold and on the summer you sweat on the subway like
in a sauna)
- you live the "rat race" : if you make 60k and up nyc life can be sweet, less than that, u live ina box or have a roommate,
- im sick of facing nasty people in the subway that give you those
bad looks (unless u have sunglasses)
- dating: quite sad as a 35 male, blond hair, in shape, I have to say
many manhattan girls are just hard to date, too busy or
have some issues or looking for the super rich man,
- sometime u feel lonely like a abandoned dog: people say "I call u back later".. that later is 2 weeks later........people are too damn busy here
I am dreaming of a place where you can have your OWN shower,
a dog , maybe some nice beaches and a stable a warm nice weather,
some friendly people that smile once a week.
I was thinking of Miami or San Francisco, but im open to other options,
WOuld you like to give me some idea?
Thank you

First, maybe you should see what/who is the "common denominator" here

you wont find any of that in sf. the beaches are cold as can be some ( not all) of the residents. despite what people would like you to believe it is a rat race, though there are some like myself who are fortunate enough to be able work around it. sf is by all means not an easy city. you could be laying in the street comatose from a seizure and people probably wouldn't give you a second glance just like in new york. so that type of city life is similar...and looks on the subway...ive been jumped at muni stops for having money in my wallet and refusing to give it up.. sf is a great city but you should be aware of the grimey aspects of it as well. send me a message if you want details.

If it's getting crazy in Georgia, California isn't the place for you. Try Florida or Texas or the Carolinas.

I was miserable in NYC too, for the same reasons as you. Consider San Diego- My partner and I moved to San Diego a month ago for his job and I am originally from LA. San Diego has all the things you mentioned:
"I am dreaming of a place where you can have your OWN shower"
- absolutely, rent is so much cheaper here and there is more space so you are more likely to afford a place of your own or a bedroom with your own shower
"a dog"
- very pet friendly, plenty of green space and parks to walk your dog
"maybe some nice beaches"
- San Diego has 92 miles of beaches and has a thriving surf & swim culture, the beaches here surpass that of LA and OC
"and a stable a warm nice weather"
- San Diego has a reputation as having the best weather in all the of the continental U.S., mild winters, cool summers, Mediterranean climate
"some friendly people that smile once a week"
- the people here are so friendly they make me feel like i am not friendly enough, very laid back and nice people and not snooty and pretentious either
I see a lot of your demographic here, 35 year old white males that are in shape. I see a lot of Asian women dating men that fit that profile.
Down side is that it isn't a large city like NYC with all the cultural amenities that it brings. Also be prepared for the slower paced lifestyle- you may feel bored sometimes.
I also suggest San Francisco. San Francisco is more fun, liberal, cultural and has very beautiful scenery. It's more expensive, but not as expensive as NYC. More of an environment for singles and people who are open with their homosexuality- with beaches but too cold for you to swim in.
If you want to escape NYC for all the drawbacks but still take advantage of living in or near a big city, consider yourself a bit of a hippy and don't mind a bit more rain and fog go for S.F.
If you really want opposite of NYC, don't care for city life and want to swim/surf at the beach and like sunshine most days of the year go for S.D.

Being from both Ny and Sf, I can give you some helpful advice. I'm quite the opposite of you btw, I hated living in SF and cannot wait to move back to New York (New York!).
I think maybe you'll enjoy San Francisco. It's just about as expensive as NY, but a lot less past faced. Neighborhoods are on top of hills and the diversity consist of the following: White, Asian, Black, and Latino. Nothing really interesting like NY where you have people from places like Siberia (well we have that her too).
Where to live? I assume you're from Harlem? Where at (I have some cousins in Spanish Harlem)? The prices in Harlem, if you are not on rent stabilization etc., can be quite expensive. For San Francisco neighborhoods?
I live in a 1-bedroom for $1,100 a month in the Richmond District. It's safe (much safer than Harlem), clean, and a few shops here and there. Nothing exciting, but if you're looking for safe in the city of San Francisco than check it out!
Oh, and the beaches are nothing like Southern Cali's. I notice a lot of East Coaster's seem to think the beaches in SF are warm, we all drive in drop tops, and have blond hair.
GOOD LUCK

I agree with last poster- I lived in Spanish Harlem for a while and the rent was ridiculous and the neighborhood isn't even safe... my bf was threatened with a knife by some nut.
And agree that SF doesn't have warm beaches, drop tops and blond hair. Go to So Cal for that.
