Being from Cleveland Ohio, it is well accepted here that there is a very large Gay population in a town called LAKEWOOD OH. Also the Ohio City area has a a strip of Gay orientated establishments and also represents a large gay population.
I have always heard that Lakewood has one of the highest ratios of Gay/Alternative lifestyle people in the country.

You can be as alternative as you want, in just about any way you want, anywhere around SF - oakland, berkeley, etc. It gets a little more conservative way out east contra costa county, but not really. Not like Kansas or something.
Also the North bay is very tolerant - Mill Valley, etc. And it is extremely expensive to live anywhere around here, in terms of housing.
