Default SF vs. New York?

Hi guys,

I'm from the UK, and am moving to the US to form a new tech start-up mid next year.

I'm mid-20s, male, single.

Which city do you think would offer the most in terms of professional opportunities, as well as lifestyle?

Cheers, -L

Thanks City Boy - the difference is, I'd be the one *offering* the job, rather than looking for one!

Here we go. I love both NYC and SF (they are the two best cities in the US IMO), but it was a no-brainer for me in deciding between the two. Basically, it came down to three things:

1). Weather. Hands down better in SF.

2). Beauty. SF is one of the most beautiful and charming cities in the world. NYC, IMO, lacks both. In fact, I think most of NYC is rather ugly.

3). Get-a-ways. It's easy to be "trapped" in NYC, as it takes so much time to get outside the city, and when you do - not much there. SF, on the other hand, has an incredible amount of things to offer outside the city, and it's fairly easy to get out of the city.

Still, if I ever left SF, I'd definitely consider NYC. I love NYC and it has more to offer than any other city in the U.S., especially in the arts. But, I fell completely in love with SF the first time I visited, and the that's never happened upon first visit of a U.S. city.

Lastly, SF in no way aspires to be NYC. I don't know anyone here that wishes we were anything like NYC. I certainly don't. SF is the most unique American city - I only hope it remains that way.

I don't know about that. Historically and still today, policies driven by the residents of SF sometimes include things that could be considered *against* trying to be like NYC.

LJB99, it depends what you're looking for in lifestyle. They're very different, both very unique cities and each have their own advantages/disadvantages/features. One general thing is that NYC is SO massive. Probably much more professional opportunity in NYC, no? I don't know.

Given the choice I say avoid the San Francsico area no matter what if given the choice. It is one of the highest tax, highest overhead places to do business. Don't take my word for it though, this survey was done by a San Jose based research firm.

"SAN FRANCISCO — Silicon Valley ranks dead last in an annual ranking of 12 U.S. technology hubs because of the region's notoriously high housing costs, traffic congestion, high unemployment rate and other quality-of life
problems."
