Commute from Livermore to Oakland via bart
Hi, same old line. I am moving to the area to take a job in downtown Oakland. I am planning on taking to BART and will get off on the Oakland City Center stop. We have a two year old and currently live in a very small community in Alaska, so we are looking for something safe and family friendly. I was thinking of Livermore, but I wasn't sure how long the commute from Livermore to the Dublin/Pleasanton station would be. Any one do that commute or have any suggestions for places to look? Thanks.

580 is notorious for slowdowns - the crunch points I hear on the news most often are Vasco and Airway - but it's only 10 miles to the D/P station. Say 20-25 minutes assuming the worst.
Of course, this is assuming you're not coming from, say, a rural area on Mines Road which would add an extra 45 minutes.

you didn't state a budget, but in the valley, Livermore is probably the least desirable, but keep in mind that it is better than many other areas and only rates that low because all the other areas are so good. Did you considers Dublin or Pleasanton? If you thought livermore was safe, then these will easily meet or exceed your expectations.

Livermore is alot better than concord and isnt as powdunk as it used to be. So many people cant afford to live in pleasanton that they all go to livermore. Anyways 580 can get ugly but you can always take a side street from livermore to pleasanton and your commute should be less than half an hour.

Depending on budget you might want to look at the Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda area. At least as safe as Livermore, nicer in many ways and a much shorter BART commute.

drive or bart?
once you get to the bart station in pleasanton/Dublin you could be in oakland by car before you could get on a train. I work in the oakland emeryville area and drive to work and unless you are leaving home after 8 am you never touch the brakes untill you hit the bay bridge. livermore to oakland at 7am will take you around 45 min with the trsffic at livermore. livermore to bart will take you 25 min then 15 to park and get a ticket then 20 to 35 min to get into oakland.
