Default Novato or Petaluma, which is better?

I am considering moving to a new job in Napa County and moving to Novato or Petaluma. The schools seem better in Novato and Petaluma than Napa and they look like nice towns, safe communities. How would someone new to the area choose which one is best?

I can't answer your specific question, but I can tell you it's a nice drive between Napa & Novato/Petaluma. I drive from Napa to San Francisco (via the Golden Gate) every day, and that's the best part of my commute... takes about 20-25 minutes between Novato-Napa, and it's a REALLY beautiful road w/ fairly light traffic. Good luck in your decision and move!

What grade level of school are you looking to place your kid(s) in? Both towns are about equal in distance to your work. Petaluma has a great downtown district that is very kid friendly, which Novato lacks. However Novato does reside in Marin County, as apposed to Petaluma in Sonoma County, and hence will probably have more $ for their schools, but not by much. The cost of housing is definately cheaper in Petaluma than novato, again, not by much. I would suggest taking a trip to both for a weekend and see what one tickles your fancy.

I agree with DowNout although you didn't mention where in Napa County you were going to be commuting and that could also sway your choice as well....Petaluma is in Sonoma County directly West of Napa County whereas Novato is South of Pet....lots of different ways to get to Napa...backroads and all..and 37 is mroe direct but then you end up on 29 which is the WORST traffic and the only major road that connects Napa,St. Helena Yountville,Calistoga...
