Default Pittsburg area?

Can anyone tell me about Pittsburg? Is it a safe area to live? What is the commute to downtown SF on Bart? I am a single female in my 30s so I am looking for a very safe place and am not familar with the area.

Pitts. is not the safest area, especially for a single female. Depending on if you are buying or renting, there are other places that are safer. Try to consider Pleasant Hill or Walnut Creek. There are certain places in Concord that are okay, but you need to know where those areas are. If you tell me what you are looking for, maybe I can guide you in the right direction. BART ride is about 35 min. from PH, or WC.

Thumbs down Pittsburg

Pittsburg is not a good area. There are good pockets but you have to be a local to know where. I operate a business in a city nearby and it is very challenging.

I had a very nice rental home in Pittsburg that I finally decided to sell.

I never had any problems when the home was rented, but, the home was broken into several times between tenants and when I had the for sale in the front yard. I couldn't even leave a garden hose outside without it being taken.

The Pittsburg PD and city did not seem to be very motivated.

My home had a small detached cottage that one day the city said was not permitted and I was given a very short time to either apply for the permits or remove it.

After spending the better part of a day on research, I was able to obtain all the original building permits from the City archive and the Tax Assessor in Martinez and then spent several more half days with the city to clear my "Permitted" building. It was a lot of hassle at time when I could least afford it.

For a small city, Pittsburg was much more problematic then all of my dealings with the Oakland.

I agree, Pleasant Hill is leaps and bounds superior. The city and building department is a pleasure to work with and the Police Chief runs a tight ship!

A lot of the Pittsburg area feels depressed economically and does not feel safe. However, there is at least one decent neighborhood in the South a bit up in the hills. There are probably other OK places but whenever you need to go anywhere, you'll have to drive through some depressing neighborhoods.

I would go for parts of Martinez, parts of Concord or Pleasant Hill (each of them has a BART station, by the way) instead. Walnut Creek is very nice but considerably more expensive. BART to downtown SF will take 40mins-1hour from that general area.

Stay away from Pittsburg at all cost. In my opinion, after Oakland and Richmond, Pitt is the next most crime ridden city in the bay

Also, try near Castro Valley BART Station and Dublin/Pleasanton BART Station. Those are relatively safe areas to be, but cost of rentals and homes is relatively high.

Home prices are dropping in these areas... I see homes listed around $400k... this would not have happened a year or two ago.
