SF crime is outragous. Id rather pay half the rent and deal with the same crime on the other side of the bay.

LOL... in one post you laugh about my saying Bayview (part of SF) is possibly more dangerous than Richmond, and now you think our crime is "outrageous?" If you're going to be constantly negative, at least try a little consistency! Btw, if you think SF's crime is that bad, have you been to Detroit or DC lately?

San Francisco is a big city and we have crime like anywhere else but not as bad as Detroit ,D.C. or even E.St Louis, for one thing the job market here is very good so it's easy to get a job here and that keeps crime down a bit, besides your regular gang banging drive bys happen when they happen which attributed to most of the cities homicides other crimes committed in the city are normally committed by outsiders, and there is no such thing as a safe neighborhood in San Francisco from St Francis Woods to the Mission you just got to keep your eyes pealed.
Never carry much money with you and conceal your pocket change from making noise, that seems to attract beggars.

If you want to attract beggars pull out a cigarette and light it. You'll attract every bum within a 5 block radius.

ImRandy: your not kiddin about that, just light up a cigarette, glad I dont smoke anymore but I constantly have to remind my freinds that are not familiar with the outdoor scene, DONT LIGHT UP, the place that is for most sure you will be bumed out of a smoke is between Valencia and Mission on 16th street, Civic Center United Nations Plaza is another good place to give away freebees, just light up and they'll come to you like your handing out free cheese.LOL

Soooo true! I'm a smoker, and that's the ONLY thing some of my friendly local bums will ask for (from me, at least). I'm usually happy to give them out, since I'd want a cigarette too if I were living on the street. In fact, sometimes that's what I offer when asked for money... "Sorry, I don't have any change, but do you want a smoke?" They never say no, LOL.

Sure hunters point has alot of crime relating to gun violence but it has a much lower crime rate than mission, igleside, and even the sunset district. though I haven't seen any crimes around my area, and i live in a shabby part of the hunters point area. I've lived here for majority of my life and have not been a "victum" of the area.

I also live in the Bayview area, and haven't been a victim of any crimes... I had more issues when I worked in Excelsior & Visitacion Valley, so I think you might be right - overall. Of course I've only lived here a year, but so far so good!

Default safe

SF is very safe if you have a lick of sense. People for whom urban areas are entirely novel may have difficulty but it's really not hard to know when you're in a bad part of town here and random, violent crime is not particularly common outside pockets of poverty and substance abuse.

Will your car window get broken? Oh yeah.

Will drunk fratboys from the eastbay try to fight you outside of strip clubs at 1am on saturday? Oh yeah.

SF is very dense so many areas have lots of people on the street until late in the evening (11pm downtown (not fidi) and there will be tons of foot traffic of regular folks coming and going).

It can occasionally be a disturbing place but hardly ever dangerous.

I guess nearly 100 "grizzly murders" in 2007 aint that bad after all, I like to walk the streets alot at night,(when it's not raining) I like the feel of the atmosphere of the nightlife and all the foot traffic in alot of parts of town, it's a happening place, theres something always going on, like Northern California said, you have to have a lick of sense, you have to be street smart and in this city common sense is a form of survival.
