Yeah Decent if you're not Black or Latino because you didn't get caught up in his out of control police tactics.

New York is far worse than San Francisco. No matter how much people wanna think Guliani did something, there are always going to be over a dozen neighborhoods in the 5 boroughs that you do not want to go in.

As long as you don't **** anybody off, stay out of people's ways, and don't venture into Sunnydale, Bayview, The Mission (after dark), and certain areas of The Tenderloin, you should fine!
"As long as you don't **** anyone off, stay out of people's ways, and don't venture into [insert neighborhood here]."

Are those rules supposed to be specific to SF or something?

The same exact thing could be said about New York...or almost any other city. Of course NYC is going to have more sketchy neighborhoods than SF. It has roughly 10 times the population.

SF has more than it's share of rough areas too...you listed neighborhoods that house over 100,000 people combined (and you forgot some parts of the Western Addition, Potrero Hill, Lakeview, and Bernal Heights too). The fact is that nowadays SF has a much higher per capita crime rate than NYC does. And many other cities do as well...

No those rules are no specific to San Francisco. I just don't understand how these panic stricken people from Stockton as if San Francisco was THAT BAD.

STAY OUT OF THE BAD NEIGHBORHOODS. Don't flash any of your money or things peole wanna steal. I have seen on numerous occasions people getting their IPods taken, wallets, and etc. **** happens but you can prevent it from happening if you don't act like every Black/Latino person walking the street is going to stab and then rob you.

Bernal Heights, Lakeview, yadda yadda yadda. All the same in one. Be smart!

I travel to Sf for work. I live in Oregon, from Chicago. Besides Detroit, DC, Miami and Baltimore nothing touches Chicago with high crime. I feel the problem With the bay area is it COST to much there, and you have alot of homeless people laying around the streets. I do enjoy the City, but its just GREEDY!

LMAO... I lived in Stockton for 3 years, and it's FAR worse than San Francisco overall. I actually delivered pizzas there, and we literally had black Xs through certain neighborhoods (on our giant map), which were "no-delivery zones" because of crime. I live in the Bayview district now, and feel 10x safer here than most parts of Stockton.

Absolutely, and that applies to ALL neighborhoods... though as I just said, I live in the Bayview, and walk my dog every night (usually after 12am) without incident - barely even see another soul. I do live in the nicer part of the district, but even the heart of Bayview @ 3rd & Palou, for example, isn't really that bad if you're smart and friendly. I lived in East Palo Alto before moving to SF, and also never personally had any problems there. Smiles go a long way, even deep in the ghetto.

P.S. Please stop using profanity, even though our software bleeps it for you - I personally couldn't care less (I swear like a sailor normally, LOL), but we do have rules of use on this site. Mmkay?

Hi guys! I'm pretty new to the forum and I'm scouting SF in order to get the hell out of Orlando. I'm tired of horribly planned city infrastructure and the crime is out of control. In 2006 Orange County FL had 120 murders for a million people. The crime rate for Orlando according City Data is double San Francisco's rate so it seems like SF should be safer.

SF looks like a great city, but judging by this thread, it looks like the concentration of the crime is going to get me in over my head. Has anyone had any luck using martial arts or mace? What is a good way to defend yourself when all else fails?

I have lived in San Francisco for about 15 years and have not had any major problems with crime. I was mugged once, the guy pointed a gun at me, I gave him my wallet, he gave it back to me and said "just the cash" I did so and that was that.

I ride the MUNI every day and walk the neighborhoods and have never had any problem with that, other than the one time, which was actually in Telegraph Hill, a rich touristy area. I am also raising my daughter here, so that tells you something about how I feel about crime and The City in general.

Yes, there are rough areas that you should not walk through at night. They are almost all in the Southeast corner of the city and you won't run across them by accident. I personally don't find the Tenderloin that dangerous, but it can be intimidating. I would avoid it at night, at least until you feel more confident about your way around. But the overwhelming majority of San Francisco is safe, day or night, the buses are safe, etc.
