Default Any cool affordable neighborhoods in the bay area?

I would like to move to the bay area soon.. San Francisco would be ideal but I'm not keen on living with 5 roomates and their pets plus their pets fleas and whatever bacterias the fleas attract...So, whats the next best alternative? A studio in Oakland? Or are there other cities and neighborhoods I should be looking at?

First, and most important question - what do you consider affordable? What's your top monthly budget for rent?

Studio in berkeley. Cheap, great town, and if you need to catch a ride to the big Sh*tty all you have to do is hop on BART.

Can we all just take a second to Kumbaya ? .................Doesn't that feel better ?
In order to keep my apartment hunt democratic i will look at Oakland and Berkeley. I should be able to scoop a decent place up in both locales for under $1000 correct?

Whites are now the largest racial group in Oakland. They surpassed blacks last year.

Large parts of Oakland and large parts of Berkeley are fine. Alameda (an island in the bay near Oakland) is a great choice too. Great town, reasonable rents, beaches, ferry to SF.

Jingletown in Oakland -- not sure of your budget... but it's a cool little artsy area.
