Yeah, you probably don't want to live in Marin City... I know a few people who live there, and even they refer to it as "The Jungle" - not because it has pretty animals, but because it's dark & dangerous.
There are many nice towns in Marin County, depending on what your budget is... Sausalito & Tiburon/Belvedere are beautiful but very expensive, and then there's Mill Valley, Novato & San Rafael. The latter three are pretty nice, though I don't know enough about them to give specific recommendations. You could also consider Santa Rosa, Petaluma or Sonoma, which aren't too far away.
