I though S.F. was supposed to be this model city of cleanliness and forward global thinking? I've heard parts of S.F. are nasty but from reading this, it sounds as if all of it is not to nice.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of scary & dirty parts of Bayview - but there are also some nice new developments, which are safe & clean without the high rent of other neighborhoods. Best of both worlds! Not to mention, we're the sunniest part of San Francisco.

Then you missed my post, along with a few others... there are many clean neighborhoods in San Francisco, and the dirtier parts are usually the most crowded. Isn't that how it usually goes in big cities?

That's _usually_ how it goes, and usually true. However, I come from NY, have lived in Chicago, been all over SF, and currently live in Berkeley. Berkeley, with the smallest population of those, wins hands down IMHO for 'filthy' city.

I suspect in both Berkeley and SF, it is the number of homeless people (who rely on trash, to, for instance, keep warm) are behind a lot of the perceived lack of cleanliness.

Damn! Those houses look sicko for that price...
I thought ChinaTown was a thousand times cleaner than NYC's version, and a million times cleaner than Boston's. Do you guys really think SF is THAT dirty? I am somewhat surprised to hear that. Is Oakland dirtier or about the same?

Every city has grit-but it certainly their defining characteristic.Oakland is about the same-maybe a little cleaner in my experience.

Is "sicko" a good or bad thing? I'm assuming you mean good, since that price is AMAZING for a 3-bedroom house in San Francisco! Btw, it's only 8 years old, so the inside is really nice & modern too... only thing I hate is the wall-to-wall carpeting, since I have a dog and 2 cats. Hardwood is soooooo much better with pets - not to mention, I just love how they look. If I actually owned that house, the first thing I'd do is tear up the carpet & put down some nice wood floors.

Well, I've never thought of Chinatown as being dirty, and in fact I think it's very clean - so I guess we all have a different perception here. Like I said before, there are definitely some filthy spots in SF, but also some very clean areas... try visiting the Marina, Presidio, Sunset, SeaCliff, Nob Hill, Twin Peaks, North Beach, and even my little "ghetto" neighborhood in Bayview, and you'll see VERY clean streets & homes. Oh, and I agree with the poster who said it could be related to our homeless population. Obviously the neighborhoods with lots of homeless (Tenderloin, Civic Center, etc.) will have dirtier streets, since that's where they live.

Yeah I definitely meant really nice in ref to those houses. I can think of at least 7 cities in NJ (Camden, Newark, Trenton, Jersey City, Patterson, Orange) that are much dirtier than SF. So dirtiest in California might be more like it. But I doubt that even..cough cough LA Sac

I'm not saying SF isn't dirty...but relative to what! Ya know what I mean!
