This may sound like a strange question, but my family is considering moving to Alameda from the mountains, and I'm wondering what the exercise/sport options are for people in Alameda. Given the option, I really like doing thing outdoors. Specific questions are:
Can you kayak? Run off pavement? Windsurf? Other intense sports? I'd love to hear from people who live on the island about how you get in your outdoor fun and exercise. I really appreciate any local knowledge. |

Hmmmmm... I don't do any of those sports, and I think the water's a little rough for kayaking & windsurfing. Lots of people windsurf on the Peninsula, though, especially around Coyote Point in Burlingame - about a 20 minute drive from Alameda (with light traffic). You shouldn't have a problem finding places to run and hike, since we have a lot of parks... Alameda is a very family-friendly town, from what I understand, so I'm assuming they have plenty to choose from. One sport that's really popular here is rollerblading, but I don't know if you'd call that "intense." Surfing is also big, and the best beaches for that are in Pacifica, SF, Half Moon Bay, and down south in Santa Cruz. Just watch out for sharks!
