The commute from Tracy to Oakland would be a misery. Even if you just drove from Tracy to Dublin and then rode BART into Oakland it would still be at least 1.5 hours each way, if there were no accidents. I don't know where you're living now, but if it's at all possible I would actually try it if I were you. Stay overnight in Tracy and get yourself to Oakland by 8am, then you'll have some real idea whether you want to do that drive day in and day out for years.

Greengirl is right - it's a horrible commute . And soon gas will be $4/gallon. Try to live as close to Oakland as you can.

Hi Brewer2930 - sorry I don't have any better news other than no, its not a great commute. I live in Patterson (30 mins past Tracy!) and work in Alameda. If I leave the house by 5:30am, I can be at work by 7:00am.

I agree with what everyone says-- commute would suck. Tracy is an exurb wa-ay out there so what else can one expect? The freeway is not in the best of shapes either-- West has spectacular potholes and East has no dividing lines (in some places).

Livermore or Dublin are closer and Dublin has a huge number of new apartment buildings right next to BART. Might try your luck there.

Besides, don't forget Hayward-- it isn't the most wonderful place but it is cheaper and it isn't particularly dangerous, according to crime stats. Castro Valley is nearby too and is better.

Finally, not all of Oakland itself is that expensive either. There are somewhat dumpy neighborhoods with newer apartment buildings that have controlled access-- I'd take those any time over commuting to Tracy (if no kids, that is).

The East Bay is expensive - as much so as the peninsula for renting. I tried looking up how far I would have to commute to save money over my place in SSF, and it was over 50 miles!

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the info....still working on it though. Going to look at apartments in a couple weekends. Probably in the Livermore/Pleasanton/Dublin area. Just trying to find something under $1200 for a one bedroom!
