Can't go wrong.. San Mateo is A+ prime through and through. You can go for convenience and not worry about getting caught in a bad neighborhood, because there really aren't any. Given a choice, though, I'd live in the area called San Mateo Park which is west of El Camino between Peninsula and Poplar.

I grew up on Poplar Ave! Sonarrat is right about SM Park, it's a beautiful neighborhood, and we were very happy there for 15 years... they'd probably go to San Mateo High, which is a very good school. Aragon and Hillsdale High are also great (as are the middle & elementary schools around there), and the surrounding area called "San Mateo Hills" is a really good neighborhood. One thing I must correct from above, though, is that San Mateo DOES have a bad part - east of El Camino Real, roughly between Poplar Ave. & Delaware St. Particularly the area called "Sunnybrae," which is kinda sketchy... you're not likely to get shot in a drive-by or anything, but it's loud & fairly run-down. I mean no offense by this, but it's been dubbed "Little Mexico" by the locals, and is where the majority of new immigrants live. That alone doesn't make it a bad place, but they typically don't have a lot of money, which leads to a rough neighborhood. So based on what you seem to want, I'd recommend staying west of El Camino - can't go wrong with that!
P.S. The zip codes you should look for are 94402 (SM Park) & 94403 (the hills), although some good spots are in 94401 as well.
P.P.S. Try to get them into Bayside Elementary and Carey Middle School if possible... both are among the top-ranked in the US! I also happen to know the principal of Carey (he was my favorite teacher in high school - at Crystal Springs Uplands), and he's a terrific guy.

Does anyone know how the areas east of 101 are? There's some areas east of 101 that are still in the 94402 and 94403 zip codes.

I have a coworker who lives there, off of Norfolk under 92. He seems very happy.

It's pretty nice, depending on exactly where it is... Norfolk is fine, nothing fancy but safe enough, and the area off Hillsdale Blvd. is fairly nice.

Gizmo, I'm still a bit confuse on the zip code and area. How do I know which area or zip code does San Mateo High School accept?

I don't have any direct experience with San Mateo schools. Some are very good, some are not. You should look over the information at Greatschools.net as a starting point. You do want a school with at least an 800 api.
California schools - CA elementary, middle and high school information
Are you set on the idea of San Mateo? Have you thought about Burlingame or Millbrae? Both have excellent schools at all levels. Mills (Millbrae) is the highest scoring high school in the SMUSD.
