Default "1/3 of SF is homeless, 7 out of 10 males in SF are gay" ANY TRUTH TO THIS

I know this might be extreme but is there any truth to this statement:
"1/3 of SF is homeless, 7 out of 10 males in SF are gay"

Is homelessness this extreme of a problem? and are there THAT many gays in SF??

NO WAY and not even close to reality! where would you hear something that ridiculous? I know people have some stereotypes and misconceptions about SF but that is like saying the earth is flat or something.

No way. Homeless rate is less than 0.1%. As for gays, it's not likely. It seems that way because gays come from all over the world to hang out there.

Nah, that's definitely an exaggeration. We do have a lot of homeless, but it's nowhere near that high... read this: Mayor Office Press Room
As for the gay population, it's really hard to say, especially if you factor in bisexuals and "curious" folks. Nationally it's estimated at 1/10 for both genders, I believe, so it might be closer to 1/5 here. But I have to ask, why does that matter? I can understand being shocked or wary about the number of homeless, since that can affect your daily life here - but who cares how many gay people there are? In my opinion, the more the merrier!!

I seem to remember reading that SF's population is 11 percent gay/lesbian, which while higher than the national average, is still not all that high, especially considering SF is considered the gay "mecca" of the US.

As for homeless people, according to a few studies I've seen over the past several years, the homeless population is anywhere from around 4,000 to 15,000 (wikipedia says 7-10,000). Either way, that's nowhere near close to 1/3 of the population. SF has around 800,000 residents. it's still the highest per-capita homeless population for a big city in the US though.

I knew San Francisco had some stereotypes but damn. Common sense would tell you thats an exageration.

When I lived in San Jose, and would go back home (Iowa) and talk about San Francisco, the first thing out of everyones mouth was about the gay population. They thought people were making out in the streets and I would get mobbed by gay guys.

I would try telling them its not like that, but they have this image in there head. Don't know where it comes from really...

FOX News, perhaps? Seriously, the media LOVES to play up the stereotypes, and some people are gullible enough to believe it... I might too, if it weren't for the fact that I've traveled so much. When my parents told us we were moving to SF (I was 6 years old), all I knew about it was Rice-a-Roni and earthquakes - also confused it with LA, and thought blond women in bikinis would be everywhere.

Yeah that's true, just like 80% of the people in Detroit are felons, 75% of people in LA are coked out addicts that live in the Hollywood Hills, 84% of Chicagoans are fat and have had 3 heart attacks one of which was suffered at a Bears game and 92% of Atlanta population hate black people, including black people.
