Alameda
I've been looking around different areas, and it seems like Alameda is pretty reasonable as far as rent. Is it a nice area, and is public transportation easily accessible to get into SF? I haven't heard a lot of people talk about it, is there any reason why?
I'm moving to the bay area in June and will be working in the SOMA distric.

It's a great little city, I think. People may not talk much about it simply because it's smaller and fewer people live there. There's a very easy commute to San Fran if you work in SOMA: the AC Transit Transbay bus (Line O and I think there also might be another Alameda line?), which drops you off right in SOMA. We have friends who commute on the O and think it's the greatest. The one caveat is that it doesn't run at all hours, so access to the city off-hours can be tricky. I'd look on the east end of the island near Park Street--there's a great little downtown there and a lot of apartments for rent, etc.

Alameda is a good solid city in the heart of the Bay Area... The temps are on the mild side... never too hot or too cold...

Because public transportation to/from is kind of a pain. It's served like on the hour from the Transbay Terminal. Other than that, it's the bus into/out of downtown Oakland.

Generally, if you have to cross the Bay Bridge that shaves about 25% off of the price of rent for a comparable neighborhood compared with San Francisco or the peninsula.. partially because they're considered more desirable areas, and partially because the commute is a royal downer. But the AC bus service is a good, reliable option, and they get their own completely dedicated lane to bypass the dreaded Toll Plaza.

Anyone commuting into SF from Alameda should seriously consider the ferry. Best rid in town . . .
Oh, and Alameda is a great town. Lived there for about 10 years and loved it.
