Antioch's a Bargain...but is it a good place to live? (rent, HOA)

Antioch has certainly trended downwards with the whole foreclosure crisis and all of the "investment properties" turned sec. 8 rentals. The commute is brutal but keep in mind Antioch is a fairly spreadout city so commute times to BART can vary depending where you live within the city.

I am sure crime varies greatly too depending what part of Antioch you live in. I think the crime there is above the suburban average but not as bad as its reputation. Crimes that make the Antioch local paper happen on an hourly basis in Oakland, SF, Richmond, etc but since they are so common place in those cities they do not make the news.

If more people like the poster start moving in, maybe the area will improve. For the commute alone I'd still take Concord over Antioch anyday. That Antioch / Brentwood commute is a nightmare.

haha everyone is exaggerating the crime ridiculously
antioch is quiet and suburban. It is not the crime-ridden, burnt out city someone reading this thread would think it is. Also, those pigs need to be shot if they continue to blatantly violate the rights of the few minorities living in antioch through section 8.

Along with your very big house make sure to get a very good home alarm system. I had one of those homes in a newer nicer neighborhood and not only was it burglarized but we also got a bullet hole through one of the upstairs windows. If your thinking about moving to Antioch, you may want to check out Richmond too - they are quite similar (people wise). Check out Brentwood, the crime isnt quite as bad there --- yet.

I would not want to live i Antioch. Too hot, long commute. But then I'm from East Oakland and I actually like it, so what do I know.

We moved to Antioch in 1999 from Pittsburg and yes it has changed drastically. We lived off of Deer Valley/Lonetree and it got to the point where we wouldn't even go into Albertsons (now Luckys) at night time because of the thugs hanging out there. They harrassed people and even jumped some. That particular shopping center is even patroled by security and the local police come by on a regular basis. There have been huge fights with the kids from Deer Valley High School. My daughter hated that school because of the segregation. The kids in Pittsburg at that time mixed and although they had their propblems too, I don't think it was as bad.
As far as section 8 goes, there have been many homes destroyed by tenents who just didn't care. Section 8 is a good program if ran right. The problem is the city doessn't stand behind the homeowner.
We have since moved to the foothills and rented our Antioch home. We come back frequently and quite frankly, it looks worse everytime. Our neighborhood is still decent, it's the places where the punks all hang out that makes it hard to shop locally.
You asked whether Antioch is a good place to live. I do know the city is trying to improve and they are cracking down on slumlords and keeping the town looking nice. Our daughter is now looking to buy there because of the prices but I know she's not crazy about it. We can only hope that things get better.
What a wonderful world it would be if we could all just get along.....

I want to purchase a residential property in east bay. Which one is better. Antioch or Brentwood or Oakley? If any one has information these towns please guide me

Schools are bad, crime is rampant, commute is unbearable. Brentwood and Oakley aren't as bad...yet. Stay West of Bay Point. Pleasant Hill, Martinez and many parts of Concord are more desireable. Even nicer is Walnut Creek and Lafayette; however, the cost of housing increases dramatically.

Don't focus on just the house. Consider schools, shopping, parks, biking, movie theatres, city functions. For these reasons alone, avoid East CCC. Sorry for those who have moved there in the past 10 years, this is just a fact.
