But seriously I can sympathize with your disgust at the section-8 types coming in and bringing down the area. It is being repeated all over California and indeed America. Nice neighborhoods being ruined by drug dealers, gangsters and prostitutes.
You are moving away and I can understand why.. I hope your parents will be able to move out and not be victims of the crime creeping in.
I'll tell my sister NOT to move to this part of SR !!!

Well, the guy with the paper sack and smoking pregnant wife is white, the dude who tried to beat my door in was black, and the dude with the dog is latino. No race or culture has a monopoly on dumb.
I appreciate diversity in background and origin, as long as we have unity in culture. America isn't just a place, it's an idea.
"E pluribus unum" Out of many, one. A beautiful, unifying concept.
not "E pluribus pluribus" which seems to me where we're headed.
Anyway, I hope your sister finds a nice place.

Santa Rosa and Surrounding Areas
I know this sounds crazy but we are planning to move from Brooklyn to somewhere near the Santa Rosa, CA area. I've been reading posts and looking at pictures of real estate. The pics of Santa Rosa don't look that nice, lots of talk of gang problems and bad schools. Coming from Brooklyn, it sounds funny, but can anyone suggest an area within 60 miles of San Francisco that is nice for families, good shopping and restaurants, good schools, low crime and dare I say it, somewhat affordable to live.

There are nice areas around Santa Rosa, but as for being affordable, I don't know. It depends on your income and whether you are bringing R.E. equity with you I suppose.

The problem is not with the backgrounds of those folks you mentioned but rather their upbringing and penchant for crime.
I know plenty of 2nd & 3rd generation Mexican-Americans who are proud of their origins but also embrace the American way of life. They are even more outspoken about their contempt for the "chollo life style" (gangsters) than Whites are.
Again its all in how you were raised and the respect for your parents and the law that determine if you will be a good citizen or a thug.

When asking about Santa Rosa in the past, we were told that we should avoid Santa Rosa South, its said to be the grimier part of town. But as we haven't been there ourselves, can't tell you if that's true or not. Someone also suggested that Coddingtown (north-west, near Coddingtown mall), is a little suspect after dark.
QUESTION:
We are looking to buy in Roseland (west side of Santa Rosa), near Sebastopol Rd, and are wondering whether its a nice area, and if it has much in the way of amenities.
Any advice welcome!

I am also looking at the Santa Rosa Area for a Senior Mobile Home community. I want a nice community in a good area of town. Does anyone know anything about the area on Hardies Lane north of Steele?

Wow
I just moved into an area south of Hwy 12 and I love it. I was told to avoid North of 12 because of gang activity. I live between Hearn and Bellevue Ave. My home is newer as it was built in 2002. We are central to everything and I am within walking distance of a Starbucks and a nice Chinese restaurant. There is also a really nice park a block away. It is a younger neighborhood, lots of families with school age children. Seems safe because the kids are out without parents and not getting into trouble. It is in a development called Bellevue Ranch (there are some huge home in this neighborhood, and smaller homes. We chose this area because there are no sex offenders in our neighborhood. I don't know why this area is getting bad remarks. Is Bellevue Ranch considered the Roseland area? I'm confused because their seems to be a lot of homeowner pride and neighbors watch out for each other. I am Caucasian and have always lived in "all-white" neighborhoods and welcome the change to a diverse neighborhood. Haven't seen any cops out arresting anyone, but I can tell you I always ALWAYS here about shooting, robberies ect. in BERKELEY, CA but I haven't seen anythign on the news about the crime in SR.
