Daly City????
Hello all!
Thought we'd be moving to Portland, but my husband work is transferring to San Francisco instead.
Want to live on san francisco side. not east bay. Would love to live in North Beach area, but way out of our price range. Thinking Daly City... not too bad of distance to downtown san fran????
And if Daly City is NOT the place to be, where else?? no higher than 5k a month in rent... thanks!!!
Biggest 2 things I need to know are:
neighborhood: bakery, coffee shops, stores close by... tree lined streets???
Best schools in Daly City (as we have a 7, 5 and 3 yo)
Crime
Any and all help will be much appreciated.
Thank you!!

Hello,
For that price range and list of requirements you are almost certainly looking for Burlingame. Daly City is a lower middle-class suburb that has problems with Asian gangs and does not have good schools. You won't find everything you're looking for until you hit Millbrae and Burlingame.

Schools are the big problem in SF as the whole city is on a lottery system. You will have no idea where your kids are going, and there are some very rough schools.

That's right. You get to state a preference, but only about 63% of applicants got their first-choice school last year. 18% didn't get into any of their choices and were assigned to another one.

I agree with the other post about Burlingame - less than 20 miles from SF. A much nicer area than Daly City and better weather (less wind and fog than in Daly City). The schools are much better. You will find bakeries, coffee shops and tree-lined streets in Burlingame. Caltrain, a commuter line between SF and San Jose stops in Burlingame and it's about a 20 min train ride into SF. Have to disagree. Parts of Daly City are rough, but there are also large sections which are peaceful and almost entirely free of violent crime. The Asian gangs usually only target other asian gangs and members. So as the old saying goes; yah lay down with dogs, yah get up with fleas.
As for Millbrae, the first circle cartel (a mix of black, islander and hispanic gang members) can be violent, and are notorious for drug/property crime. One member was recently involved in a police stand-off outside of the PizzaHut/TacoBall express on ECR. No shots were fired, but police did recover weapons and drugs. To be fair, they only roam a small section of Millbrae (the east side of ECR), but you will see members occasionally crossing over into the westside communities.
Burlingame is a funny one. Expensive homes and well-off residents, but lots of bored, rich teenage posers. These "wiggers" (google it) are responsible for about 80% of the pseudo-gang activity and violent crime in the city. There was an incident that took place about a year ago on Peninsula Ave. A local man was on his way to starbucks when he was approached by two caucasian youths dressed in "gang apparel." They asked the man for money, and when he refused, one of them struck the man with a wallet chain while the other stomped and kicked him. To be honest, you're MORE likely to be attacked by pseudo-gang members than you are to be attacked by actual gang members. Actual gang members live by a code, one which usually leaves non-gang members free from attack. Pseudo-gang members do not, and will attack anyone for any reason.
Won't argue with the point about the schools though. They are most certainly better in burlingame than they are in DC.

Millbrae and Burlingame are both very nice, safe, communities with excellent schools all the way through (elementary, middle and high school).
