Default Commute San Francisco to Oakland....?

I'm moving to SF Bay Area next month, and currently doing some research on housing.

I will be working near the 18th Street BART Station in Oakland, but I would like to live in San Francisco.

If I live in an area not near BART (i.e., Inner Sunset, Inner Richmond, safe part of Mission District, Nob Hill), how bad would my commute be by public transportation?

How long would my commute be by car? Is the Bay Bridge commutable daily?

Thanks in advance!!!

Live near BART in the city (16th and 24th Street stations are walkable to some nice areas) and you've got a lovely commute. Inner Sunset and Inner Richmond (and even some parts of Nob Hill, unless you're okay with steep hills) are not especially walkable to BART, though. You can also live in SOMA, if that's your style, and commute by transbay bus--it's also pretty fast and drops you off at the 19th Street BART too. I wouldn't drive it--it's not super long, but can be very congested, and parking in downtown Oakland during the day is frustrating and potentially expensive.
