Default Apartments in Alameda

Hi! My family(with 2 kids) and I are moving from Minneapolis to California in October. I will be working as a pharmacist in Oakland. I have read the threads about Oakland not being a nice place for a family with kids etc etc. We are considering renting an apartment in Alameda instead. Any ideas about what particular apartments are nice or those we should stear clear of?
I am especially interested in those along Shoreline Drive. Thanks!
