redwood city
I keep hearing that if your going to live in redwood city, live west. But I have heard west of El Camino and west of Middlefield. Which one should I stay west of? What about in between the two?

Stay west of El Camino Real (hwy 82). Also check out the town of San Carlos - a nice, quiet little town just north of Redwood City.

West of El Camino and especially close to Whipple. Close to Jefferson is also OK, but not right on it. Take it from someone who's lived right on Jefferson - it's impossibly noisy.

Check out: http://www.redwoodcity.org/finance/f...dSurveyAtt.pdf
It doesn't tell what the actual crime rates are by neighborhood, but it tells about satisfaction with the neighborhood police patrols and self reported "safety in neighborhood", "weed/junk/grafitti problem", and several other things are by six neighborhood area (which happen to be split nicely by el camino).
(here is a map that shows redwood city neighborhoods, but a few of them are combined in the survey: Redwood City | Residents | Neighborhood Association Map)

Facing highway 84 would also be somewhat noisy, definitely stay west of El Camino Real, this rule applies almost everywhere except for Palo Alto, and a few other places.

I have lived near downtown RWC and found it to be really cool, actually we are in the process of moving back.
You can tell the bad areas from the good, or at least I can, the downtown is so nice now.
