I'd rather live in a townhome in Pleasanton or San Ramon than buy in those other communities. I believe that older, small homes in San Ramon are running around the $500Ks (maybe under?).

I attended Woodrow Wilson, John Muir Jr. High (when it was a Jr. High), and Pacific High Schools. I left when I was 33, and SL was starting to have issues then.
Property is definitely less expensive in all the areas mentioned than it was...

Castro Valley has some very good elementary schools... I work with several people that left Castro Valley for Pleasanton when their kids were of High School age...

I guess it's all relative... I live in East Oakland, work in San Leandro and have 2 family members that are Real Estate Brokers... one Castro Valley and the other over the hill in Walnut Creek.

San Leandro will soon have a new state of the are Kaiser Hospital and has been busy building new schools after a period of selling off school property...

Piedmont is the only place I know in the East Bay where it is not uncommon for homes to receive multiple bids and overbids... top notch public schools and low crime are always a winning combination.

San Leandro closed two perfectly good high schools. Marina High is a senior center (I think). Pacific is the Nordstrom Rack shopping center. Several years after the school closure fiasco, they came back to the voters for a bond to build new schools. That was terribly unpopular. My best friend's folks still live in SL off of Davis Street.

I moved to Contra Costa County because you can get way more bang for your buck here. I like Castro Valley, and IMO, it the best balance between safety, school quality, and commute for the poster.

SL used to be very safe, and I don't think that's true anymore. We (as kids) used to roller skate at night at the Marina, frequent Bay Fair Mall, etc. We really used to walk the streets at night, and I don't think kids can do that there anymore.

Ultrarunner, I did not know about a new Kaiser in San Leandro! Where will it be and when is it expected to open? I am a nursing student and am finding out that nursing jobs for new grads around here are few and far between. Seeing that I live in Castro Valley, a nursing position in San Leandro would be great! Any info you have would be appreciated. Email me if you prefer. Thanks so much!

Vicky

Vicky,

I think that Kaiser requires at least one year of experience before you can work there. Most do. County hospitals such as Fairmont (in San Leandro) and Highland (in Oakland) will give newbees their one year of experience.
