Fairfax or Sausalito? (Marin County)
Hi! We're looking for a community to raise kids in, and we have decided on Marin County, but we're not sure which specific town to move to. Fairfax and Sausalito are our two favorites right now, but we're having trouble deciding. We're pretty confident in the quality of the public schools in both areas. We like that Sausalito is so close to the city, but Fairfax seems to be a manageable distance away too. We're looking for a community that is very liberal, laid-back, with a "bohemian" atmosphere. We're mainly concerned about how life is going to be like in these towns for our future children, from small child to teenager. Which town will be a more fun place for a kid to grow up?

I see no one from those areas has responded....
I have been acquainted with many families living in Fairfax, and it's a bit further than Sausalito and is green and very nice. Sausalito is stunning being on the water with it's village-atmosphere downtown, very artsy and fun, hosting annual art fairs. Fairfax is more spread out and is also beautiful, off the water of course. Why don't you look at the population counts of the schools and the API scores of the schools, the athletics, etc? I'm guessing Fairfax has more kids, but that is strictly a guess.

I was wondering if the OP ever moved to either of these places. We are considering those areas and have two little ones to think about too. Thanks.

Both areas are nice but I prefer Fairfax as it is not a big touristy place.

this thread is pretty old so the OP is probably long gone. I haven't lived in Marin County for a million years but still have lots of friends there: for fun and interesting activities, Sausalito would be awesome but for raising a family I think I would opt for Fairfax..

I figured the OP might not check anymore, but I thought it was worth a try. Thanks for the input on Fairfax. Would you guys mind telling me what you like about Fairfax? Thanks again.

They are very different towns. Fairfax is more laid back but a longer commute to the city if that's where your going to be working. Sausalito is breath taking and I love it, in fact that's where i live with my two children. it's got great nursery schools, Sausalito Nursery School and Sparrow Creek. The elementary school has historically been challenged but there is a charter school, Willow Creek Academy that's made great progress. If you want to get a report on the public schools for both towns you can download the report or for more information on Marin County go to the Marin Home sale blog.
