CRIME:
Modesto - 8,412.1
Stanislaus County - 6,188.6
Stockton - 9,401.0
San Joaquin County - 5.043.4
Oakland - 8,011.3
Alameda County - 3,958.6
Los Angeles - 5,064.3
Los Angeles County - 3,388.3
California, Disaster News, Weather, History, Message Board
Modesto ranked a 3 out of 100 in safety. Check this out:
Modesto crime rates and statistics - Neighborhood Scout
Stockton crime rates and statistics - Neighborhood Scout
Wikipedia:
The area is plagued by some of the worst air quality in the nation, on occasion surpassing even that of Los Angeles. Modesto had the highest auto theft per capita rate in the United States five of the last six years. Its suburbs are among the most impoverished in the nation, ranking sixth poorest out of the 100 largest metro areas. It is a major meth distribution hub and was considered for many years to be the "Methamphetamine Capital of the World." In 2007, Modesto was named last in a list of best American cities in Cities Ranked & Rated, 2nd Edition [1] Number 23 on the top 400 most dangerious metropolitan areas in 2007 Morgan Quitno[2] (it ranked 16th in 2006 [3] and 39th in 2008 [4]). In 2009, Forbes Magazine ranked Modesto the worst metro area with over 500,000 residents [5] just months after placing it 5th on the list of most miserable American cities. [6]
Stockton is worse than Modesto, but not by much.

In Modesto, the better areas are in the FAR NORTH SIDE. Move as far Northeast as possible and you should be okay.

I don't know how those numbers are calculated but showing Oakland safer than Modesto is misleading and incorrect, even after adjusting for population difference.
Oakland is a little less than twice the size of Modesto but Oakland has a much higher per capita violent crime rate.
We can double the actual number of crimes in Modesto to account for population differences and it is still lower than Oakland's total.
Property crime rates in Modesto and Oakland are similiar.
The FBI data for 2008 (the latest info) shows this using the FBI classification method (violent crime is the total occurances of murder, rape, robbery and assault, property crime is the total occurances of burglary, theft, car theft and arson), I included Sacramento for reference :
Modesto (pop 205,750) Violent crimes = 1,439; Property crime = 10,874
Stockton (pop 293,073) Violent crimes = 4,322; Property crime = 17,955
Sacramento (pop 467,065) Violent crimes = 4,660; Property crime = 22,499
Oakland (pop 401,857) Violent crimes = 7,905; Property crime = 21,488
Individual numbers for each of the 8 crimes examined in the FBI groupings are also available at:

These numbers aren't a "danger index", just a crime index, based on total crimes. Overall, that year, there were more crimes committed in Modesto than Oakland (per capita).

Other areas you should consider are Lincoln Village West (in Lincoln School District) and Spanos Park West or East (Lodi School District). Spanos Park West is a fairly new development and more desireable than East.
I have a lot of friends in the Brookside area and it is nice, a great neighborhood to walk and jog, you'll see that a lot with the Green Belt being so close.
Don't be scared, we won't bite. Do get a car alarm and dont' leave anything in your car. Car thefts and break-ins have happened everywhere. Now you know!=)
Good luck to you and Welcome!

The area along I-5 around March Lane, Ben Holt Dr. and Hammer Lane in Stockton is very nice. Much of the rest of Stockton leaves a lot to be desired. As for shopping, there is Welcome to Weberstown Mall on March Lane and nearby is Sherwood Mall - Fashion. Food. Fun. Experience it! - Stockton, California
I don't live there, but all I remember about dining is the Black Angus Steak House on March Lane and across the street there is a Marie Callender. Don't know anything about more upscale restaurants than that.
