CSU East Bay in Hayward? How's the area?
I have been trying to figure out where I'm going to finish college, unfortunately my chances are fairly limited at this point as I don't want to wait any longer to go to the actual university (sick of community college), one of the schools that I can get into for next semester is CSU East Bay. Of course I plan to go check out the area myself but I'd like to hear from anyone who has gone there and also about the area. Is there anything to do for students such as groups / clubs at the school and how is the housing situation in the area? Are there reasonably priced safe places to live or is pretty dismal.. thanks for any info.

There are definitely safe areas nearby that aren't totally ridiculous. In California, the desirability of a neighborhood is often directly proportional to its elevation, and the university is in the eastern foothills above the city of Hayward. Deer roam around and many of the East Bay's wealthy live in the area, but not at the expense of student-friendly apartment buildings.

Thanks.. I guess that is true about the elevation thing in California, I've lived in a lot of different areas of California and that holds true for the most part.. of course the only other factor would be distance to the coast (more in southern California) that would affect the real estate's price. I will have to go take a look at the area.. sounds nicer than what I was expecting, I have been to parts of Hayward before (I think downtown) and wasn't too happy with the area, one reason is I was at a gas station there once and two little hoodlum kids came in grabbed some things and ran out (this is during the middle of the day), the guy who worked there said it happens all the time, just gave me an impression of a crime infested place.

There is a stark contrast between the flatlands and the hills.

I went there, but I transfered for my major. I went to the campus in concord for 2 quaters and the Hayward campus for 2 quarters. I like the school overall. Would you ever consider dorms?? They have newly built dorms and they are building more at the moment. They have some apartments that line the street going up the hill to the school that you could look into. I am sure they have groups/clubs you can join, but I never joined one so I'm not exactly sure how you'd find out about it. Have you looked into San Jose State, Sacramento State, and/ or San Francisco State?
