Community Colleges in Marin or Sonoma County
Can anyone give me any info regarding the community colleges in Northern California. We are looking to relocate and have kids that will be going to college there. Also if anyone can let me know about the areas of Rohnert Park, Sonoma, Greenbrae, San Rafael, Corte Madera, we are looking to rent a home for about a year and are seeking a nice, quiet, safe, family neighborhood. WE were told that these areas are nice. Thank You!!

I love College of Marin, i have over 110 units completed there, mostly just for fun. It has a pretty substantial "working adult" enrollment, specially in the night classes. I only attended Santa Rosa for 1 semester, it was bigger with more of a college kid feel to it, but I was 18 at the time so it could have changed since then. College of Marin i have been attending, on and off for the last 14 years. i graduated from its Auto Tech program and took a lot of art and science classes. The staff there are, in my experience, awesome. i have had some great teachers and a lot of fun in many of my classes.

Sonoma State (SSU) is a university, not a community college by definition. You would be paying university tuitions..and since I put my son through SSU
recently (graduated BS degree 2005) I can assure you it is not cheap...
Santa Rosa Junior College, SRJC, is a true community college, and one of the highest ranking ones in the country. You would be paying less tuition than SSU, I believe it is a set enrollment fee, plus a few dollars per unit. My son did his GE classes there, and then transferred to SSU with his AA degree..saved a ton of $$...
Lots of different night classes too...whether you are wanting to take an accounting class to advance yourself, or simply an international cooking class for the fun of it and personal enrichment...
Hope this helps...

Thank You MissDaisy, that was the plans for my two kids. They want to go to a Jr/Community College and obtain there AA and then transfer to a University for there BA. I read where going to a Community College will save quite a few $$$.
I appreciate your feed back. I am glad to here that SRJC is one of the highest ranking ones in the country. I want to make sure my kids go to a solid and safe college.

You are very welcome..
As a side note, SRJC is very strict in what they expect from their students, which both my son and I found valuable, in that they *teach* a student how to be a college student rather than a high school student.
I personally felt this was a good *bridge* from high school to university, since university professors assume that by the time you are in their class, you should have the maturity and responsibility skills required to be there.
Alot like preschool relative to grade school, but on a MUCH higher level. It is pretty well proven that a child who attends preschool is more likely to be successful in grade school than one who doesn't.
Same theory applies to the transition from community college to university..

Thank MissDaisy,
I agree. The transition from high school to college is a big change for kids. I believe that we need to assist them, especially that first year. It can be overwhelming to a new college student. Many flounder there first year and loose their focus. That is why I feel a good college will help with this new stage in their lives.
