La Honda and Half Moon Bay
Hi!
My husband and I are looking to relocate to the area in the next couple months. The two areas that we are interested in are La Honda and Half Moon Bay. Both locations are close to his job, while also providing a secluded atmosphere. Looking for rentals online has proven to be challenging, and we were wondering if renting in these areas is possible. We don't live close by, so all of our searching so far has been on craigslist. I would love to find another resource, if anyone has one. Would it be possible to make a realistic commute to the Peninsula from these locations?
Thanks a bunch!

Esp LaHonda has some of world's most enjoyable mountain roads to reach it from Peninsula office corridors like MenloPark....
Many enjoy driving these spectacular roads on fair-weather wkends ....but these roads are rather dangerous in winter, when region will often have rain storms w/fallen trees, heavy fog, car crashes, etc....and in PM, rather dangerous w/poss oncoming drunk or inept drivers (most people can't safely drive on straight, wide-open roads in day, let alone these challenging mtn twisties in low visibility)
Depending upon pricing needs, may want to look at rental houses in PortolaValley or LosAltosHills; would guess there are much cheaper rentals in the SanMateo foothills along 92....from a commuting standpoint, ideal is to be just West of 280 fwy in Woodside corridor; live in the convenient, but private and scenic, foothills...rather than up in the mtns themselves or toward the Coast w/its heavy fog and winter weather issues...

Try the classified ads at Half Moon Bay Review - CLassifieds for Half Moon Bay. That will be a bad commute from HMB over a windy 2 lane mountain road to the east side of the peninsula .

The Highway 92 commute is not as bad as people say it is.. there are much worse in the Bay Area. If you want to search for rentals in that area, you should go to San Francisco Craigslist, click the "pen" tab for the peninsula, and click Coastside (for Pescadero/La Honda/San Gregorio area) or Half Moon Bay.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like the commute will be a challenge. Is 92 really that dangerous? More so than Interstate 80 between the bay area and Sacramento?

No, 92 isn't dangerous. It can be slow but I wouldn't call it dangerous. 84 on the other hand is much more tedious than 92 and would probably drive me crazy if I had to drive it every day for work.

92 is not that dangerous, pretty gentle curves and mild inclines, though it is just a two-lane road between San Mateo and Half Moon Bay, so if there is a head-on collision no one will get through in either direction until they can get it cleared. 84 is much longer and much more hazardous.

It's not dangerous, however, it can be slow. There is a mountain range in the center of the peninsula (the Santa Cruz mountains) and the morning/evening commute over the mountains can be slow. There is also truck traffic going to/from Half Moon Bay. Hwy 92 is 2 lanes, but there are some passing lanes in a few places.
