Default San Francisco Vs New York

I am not tryng to start a debate on which city is better as I have lived in neither. I would just like your view on why SF would be a better place to live than NY.

Default it's all relative

What's better for one person may not be better for the other. The two cities are totally different. What are you looking for when thinking of a place to live? What kind of lifestyle to you live or wish to live? How do you measure quality of life? These are things that need to be known before someone can tell you which city is better to live in.

I'm confused. You start out saying that you aren't looking to start a debate on which city is better, but then as why one would be a better place to live?

What are you looking for and which of these cities better meets those criteria? That's a more relevant question.

I'm moving to SF area from a lifetime in NY. I want to move there for a number of reasons.
One major reason is the ability to be physically active outdoors about all year round. (surfing, hiking, camping)
Two, the beautiful landscape
Three, the progressive and laid back attitudes
Four, the transportation system would allow me to remain carless.

Public transportation isn't that great out here. You cant get to everywhere, like you can in NYC.

Well i didn't say its better cuz NY has the best public transit in the World!
But when I was in SF it was quite efficient, I was able to travel everywhere, Oakland to Ocean beach, so in regards to moving to another city, the tranportation system is sufficient enough to maintain my car-free life style.

It gets progressively more difficult to live without a car, the further you get from SF especially if you intend to do stuff you are talking about in the outdoors.

Without a car, you are going to be extremely limited in where you can hiking, where you can surfing and where if anywhere you can go camping.

The transportation within San Francisco proper is pretty great. Beyond there, it's sketchy and you'll be lucky to get ANYTHING at night. Some major areas get no transportation at all, like the Crystal Springs Terrace Apartments in San Bruno. Quite a large development of affordable housing.. with no public transit whatsoever.
