Thank you for the information, it's amazing to see what effect the economic crisis is having on this community. I feel badly for those who bought into the idea that this would turn into the 'town of tomorrow' - hopefully their desire to turn their investment right side up again will translate into a strong desire to grow the community. We're still considering it - my husband doesn't mind the commute. He'd only be driving in to work 2 or 3 times a week. We would be looking to rent, not buy, and only stay for a couple of years at most until we could afford to buy a home in Pleasanton. I kind of like the idea of very quiet (deserted) streets.

Actually the market is definitely going to come back and that will be a huge boon for whomever bought there now. The only problem is when will the market hit bottom?

Have you thought about Discovery Bay? Mountain House has all these nice new homes but not much else. Discovery Bay is an established town with waterways running all through, access to the delta and eventually the ocean which impacts the whole lifestyle. It offers something truly unique and special.

How are the schools in Discovery Bay? Is it within an hour's drive at 5 or 6 in the morning to Newark?

Discovery Bay is about the same distance as Mountain House, same problem of the Altamont Pass. I don't know what the schools are like, if they're Byron schools then they're pretty meh.
