Default rural areas near san francisco

Hi all, I've been looking into areas near san fran. I've gotten alot of good feedback on neighborhoods near the bay. How about nearby towns, say within 2 hours of the city. I'm looking for laid back, friendly places that have access to outdoor activities and don't have too much really hot weather. i'm from texas. Thanks.

La Honda is one. It's comfortable climate-wise because it's very close to the Pacific Ocean. Lots of great hiking, cycling, and fun driving roads in the area. Quite remote for being so close to San Francisco.

San Martin is another you might consider. Think Texas, except it cools down at night; still very much a farm town, unincorporated, but also within 2 hours of San Francisco and not so much in the middle of nowhere like La Honda is. You don't have to drive so far to get basic services.

Going north, there are a lot of coastal towns in Marin County like Inverness and Nicasio that might please your palate. Very expensive real estate.

I agree with La Honda - a small town in the mountains and in a redwood forest. There are two lane winding mountain roads to get in and out of La Honda. The beach is about 15 miles to the west.
