Is Berkeley affordable?
Last night the travel channel had "Rachel Ray's Vacation" in Berkeley, Sausalito and Mill City. I have to admit, I'm ready to move to Berkeley..... it looked so appealing, gourmet restaurants, trendy shops - hip people but can I afford it? (A retiree, under 40k a year)
Can anyone comment on what it's really like to live in Berkeley, close to all the neat stuff in town ?
Thank you for any responses on life in Berkeley

Berkeley is expensive. What areas in Berkeley were being featured? You should visit the place first. Where will you be moving from?

Yes, it is.
Visit first is my recommendation.
What you saw on TV may be somewhat misleading. I'm partial to be where you are actually, lol. Wanna switch? Don't get me wrong....I just moved to Berkeley and love it. My dear BF is here and it's why I made the move across the Bay. PM me and I'd be happy to share my personal experience. Just don't want my biz all over this public forum.

Berkeley is a very nice happening place. But housing is very expensive. Apartment shortages drive up prices like no other. It needs rent control, I went to school there and, ouch rentals are out of this world.

It's not that bad if you have 4 roommates and eat at the organic food co-op to save money.

Not very "progressive" of Berkeley, is it? They should base rents on a sliding scale there.

To me, Berkeley is too colligiate and yippie but fun still nonetheless. If I were to live there, I'd live outside the "CAL vortex", generally no less than 4 blocks from campus.

Affordable compared to what? Hong Kong? Seattle? Assbriar, TN? A frame of reference might be useful.
