We also have asian gangs, such as Wah Ching, Joe Boys and Bahala Na (this one's Filipino).
All near the projects.

It's nowhere near as bad as in LA. There are just certain cities to avoid here.

Would it be safe to say that if one is careful in SF then gangs are not much of a part of everyday life? I mean, every city has random crime and such but what are the odds of having contact with gangs in places like north beach or the financial district if one is careful?

I don't know about the other bay area cities but I don't think SF gang problems and LA gang problems can be compared.

If one is careful in any city than gangs won't have much if any part of your everyday life. Especially if you never go near gang territory. Same deal in SF. And no, North Beach and the Financial District don't have gangs, so don't worry. SF has gang problems, they're just largely different than LA's, and involve lots of loose organizations of friends who rep their neighborhood/project/block, etc, mostly sell drugs, and basically just get each other's backs. The authorities label them as gangs though, which really gives a lot more credit to most of them than they deserve, as they're not really organized except that they rep the same area. They're nothing like bloods or crips, and colors have no meaning (except for the Nortenos and Surenos, but they've been laying low with the colors recently because of the gang injunctions).

If I didn't hear it from online, I would never think there are gangs in San Francisco. It's definetely not a big problem or part of everyday life, 0%. If you live in Richmond or in Hunter's Point, it might be different, but San Francisco the 7 by 7 area of the city, no problems at all for me and I would go out at all times, morning, day, evening. Homeless were the only problem I found and little wannabe teen gang bangers who would probably cry to their mommy if they fell on the sidewalk.

i need some help here.i often read posts from sf residents who purport violent crime and gang violence is present only in bayview/hunters point but there have been 71 murders in the tenderloin, hayes valley, mission and soma in the last 3 years. also in 2008 there was a gang war in the mission that killed around 12 people in a 3 month period.

Deaths in Mission reach seven in three weeks

so why do people believe that violent crime is only in the bayview?

People don't believe that violent crime is only in the Bayview area. What I believe along with many others is that San Francisco is just as safe or dengerous as any other major city with the exception of Hunters Point or Richmond. You aren't going to find me taking shelter after midnight. People still go bar hopping and club hopping at 1 am without fear. No one is saying there isn't crime outside of Bayview, it's just nothing to be more worried about than if you were in NYC, Seattle etc.

So because you personally never had problems with gangmembers, they aren't a real problem in parts of SF? Do you spend lots of time in sketchy neighborhoods where gangbangers hang out? Do you walk around sketchy neighborhoods waving valuable stuff around? Do you dress like a gangbanger yourself? Are you a young man, especially a young man who's black or latino? If not, there's your reason why you never have had problems (not to say you WILL have problems if you match one or more of those criteria, but your chances of it go up by about 1,000 percent). You do realize that probably at least half of SF's population live in areas with gang presence of some sort? And a further...i dunno 200,000 people live in areas where gang violence actually is a real problem and a big part of life (such as the Mission, Hunters Point, Excelsior to name a few). Also...Hunters point is a part of this "7 by 7" city, as you put it. Is HP somehow excluded from the rest of SF in your mind?

Yeah, and 8 of the victims were killed in less than a week. The police really cracked down on it afterwards, and the mission didn't have any murders all year until last month when 3 men were killed when a couple Norteno sets started hitting each other.
