I think she meant a racially diverse neighborhood, but just one where black people were more than, say, just 1-5% of the place.

I don't know what else to say, other than the fact that many cities in the Bay Area are relatively tolerant and diverse in regards to European-Americans not totally dominating the demographics of one city the same way other US communities are. I would not worry so much about the racial makeup of an area in the San Francisco Bay Area and focus on home price, school district performance, safety, and the length of a commute to your potential place of work.

A sample of middle class cities in the East Bay and North Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area and their percentage of African-Americans are as follows:

Alameda is 6.21% African-American (Across the bay from SF and has view of the SF Downtown skyline)
Castro Valley is 5.14% (Conveniently located, with BART and good schools)
Dublin is 10% (BART and good schools)
Pleasanton 3.38% (BART and good schools)
Antioch is 9.7% (I would ask for a second opinion on this city as some forum members think it is so-so)
Albany is 4.1%

8.54% for El Cerrito (Conveniently located, with BART but schools not great despite affluent population)
6.70% for Union City (Conveniently located, with BART but schools vary)
10.02% for Vacaville (Travis Unified School District has good schools)
19.08% for Fairfield (Travis Unified School District has good schools)
19.31% for Suisun City
4.82% for Benicia
7.34% for American Canyon

You can go to Wikipedia.org to lookup the racial composition of any city or at Factfinder.Census.Gov. Good luck with your home search!

LOL... I think some people mistake "diverse" for "not white."

To the OP, the others have given very good advice... but I agree mostly with redwoodlvr's post on the first page, and think you might have to look beyond the ethnic makeup. Just about every part of SF has some diversity - but our overall Black population is rather small, so it'll be hard to find that AND the other criteria you're listing. The Fillmore is a good suggestion (if you pick the right parts), and possibly Ingleside or Ocean View. I live at the edge of the Bayview district, which has the highest concentration of Black residents... unfortunately it's not very safe in general, but there are some nice pockets. I found one of those pockets, and have been quite happy here for 2 years. My immediate area is majority Chinese, although we do have neighbors of all ethnic backgrounds. My house alone covers at least six ethnic groups (Black, Slavic-Jewish, Native American, Mexican, Irish, Mestizo, etc), and there are only three people here - LOL. Anyway, I really do hope you find the perfect neighborhood... we have a lot of great ones to choose from, so take your pick!

P.S. If you decide to expand your search beyond the city, check out Berkeley, El Cerrito, Alameda, San Leandro, and perhaps Daly City. These are all very diverse neighborhoods that are fairly safe, and might have what you're looking for.

I love it! Now this is what the Bay Area is all about. This is true diversity IMO. All of those ethnic groups and 3 people. ha.

San Leandro. No, no, no! The other cities, yes. (i'm joking, but seriously make SL the last choice).

Yes, true. Diversity comes in many packages even within your "own" group whatever that may be.

I know, it's great! We're all just part of the human race, though, and I didn't even know the ethnic makeup of my male roommate until recently... finally asked, since I was getting curious - LOL.

P.S. We also cover the sexual orientations, since the guy is gay, my female roommate is bi, and I am straight.

I wasn't sure about that myself, but I have a friend who lives in a nice part of SL... it's actually a really cute neighborhood, and seems rather safe. So maybe that should be the last choice, but maybe not eliminated altogether?
