Walnut Creek?

So I am assuming that Walnut Creek is out too? Someone described it as a stroller mom, golf dad kind of place. That is not us. But we really want an area with schools that are rated 10.

Walnut Creek as far as I know is very suburban, it would not fit into the life style you are happiest living.

the suburbs are really not for tree hugging vegetarian liberals
more like soccer moms and lawyer dads
i have no idea why anyone would be so obsessed with putting their kids in schools with 10 ratings.
SHeltering them will only make it more of a shock when they are faced with any kind of adversity.
If they are smart, they will do well no matter where they are, but if you subject your children to suburbia they will extremely bored
berkeley, albany and fremont have good schools, but at least they arent the middle of nowhere. they are also much more liberal. These are still suburbs though, so there isnt much to do

Something tells me that you don't have kids...Yeah, smart kids can do well in crappy schools. It's certainly not the end all be all to success. They might end up getting made fun of for being smart though, they might not fit in with the cool kids that don't really care about finishing school too. Kids that were nerdy or over achievers in my school were often taunted and/or social outcasts.
I know from personal experience that kids (especially teens) will be bored no matter where they live. You can hang at the mall or hang at the corner liquor store..You think it's really any different? You are foolish to think that living in the 'burbs is sheltering them. You think born and bred city kids don't get bored and manage to avoid drugs/alcohol addiction because of all of the museums/art galleries/ethnic food choices. Puhleese...
My best friends of my past were all born and bred San Franciscans...all VERY heavily into drugs/alcohol.
Walnut Creek isn't really the middle of nowhere.. You sound like you're saying that living in a suburb or sending them to a good school is sheltering them?
No, people in the 'burbs don't get divorced, don't do drugs, don't know what a black or Asian person is. Yes, we need to expose them to gunfire and daily beatings, homeless people on the street and Code Pink so they can be at ease with adversity/and diversity. Oh, and vegetarians only live in places like Berkeley/Albany. Only meat eaters in these cow fields of the East Bay.
It actually sounds life you've lived a sheltered life!
You're whole "soccer mom/lawyer dad" cracks me up. So it should be "can't afford extra curricular activities mom and perpetually unemployed dad with no aspirations"? This is a superior type of atmosphere to raise children? Tell me what you think after you actually have a kid.

What is an ethical vegetarian family?
Sounds kind of judgmental to me.
I'm a tree hugging environmental nazi and I'm from Texas. I'm the guy who's not afraid to get in a litterbug's face and command them to pick up their garbage. I did and stil do just fine in very conservative (I consider both the term liberal and conservative to be oxymoron) areas. I have noticed over 30 years of vocal tree hugging that the people who seem to have trouble are those who feel somehow superior to their neighbors who may be on the conservative side. It's not them who will have a problem with you. They may disagree with your ideas but ultimately it's you who decides if you can get along with your neighbors.
If you walk in assuming that because you have somewhat different priorities that you are superior and are judgmental, you will have difficulty but if you're able to treat people you disagree with respectfully, you'll get along fine.
I'm a Libertarian tree hugging atheist who's pet peeve is littering while my best friend of over 20 years is the NeoCon Poster child. If we can get along then you shouldn't have any trouble in a predominantly conservative area unless you're predisposed to not getting on. I apologize if I'm wrong but the tone of the original post struck me as condescending and judgmental. If that's the case, you'll even find people that you won't be able to get along with in Berkeley. How well you get along is pretty much up to you. Remember that you can indeed disagree with people without hating them. Many tolerant people seem to have trouble with that one.
Can't help you with the veganism. California produces a bit more than half of all the food eaten in the US so finding the foods you crave shouldn't be difficult at all. I fact, the closer you get to the central valley, the more abundant fresh produce becomes!I tried to go vegan once and only made it a couple weeks. It just didn't work out for me. If you'll agree to not hate me because I eat meat, I'll agree not to hate you for eating things I truly detest.

If you ever get on my case for littering, i will shove my trash down your throat. Self righteous preaching ftl
that said, i agree with some of your post: there is no reason for people to live around others with the exact same religion, political views, or values.
unless someone forces their opinions on me, i really dont care what they think

You might find that a little more difficult than you might imagine.
