Vallejo
I need to get a new apartment, and I'd like something pretty cheap (like a studio, no more than $1000/mo). I'd like to stay in the East Bay. I've been browsing Craigslist, and while I would've never thought of it, I'm seeing a lot of nice, historic looking places near downtown Vallejo. I'd pretty much assumed the housing bubble hit pretty hard there, and know it had some bad areas to begin with, but I'd like to hear from some folks about where the good areas and bad areas are, and overall opinions.
NOTE: While I am certainly interested in knowing about quality of life issues, the standard "Life really sucks here/be prepared to pay lots of taxes/too many [insert ethnic group you like the least] have moved in" rants waste everybody's time. Please make your comments as objective as possible.

Vallejo is a dump and ghetto, I would not live there by any means. The city already filed for bankruptcy, lots of drugs, crime, and trashy people imo. Downtown Vallejo has plenty of shady people hanging out down there, I've seen people openly doing drugs waiting for the bus downtown. I'm coming off harsh b/c I really dislike that town for many reasons; two of my relatives/family friends have been murdered in that POS city.

My uncle had a bakery downtown but moved to bigger quarters in west Vallejo many years ago. I don't remember downtown being all that bad & went to a movie theater with my cousin several times.
Vallejo is definitely in decline but I think it will improve over time.

When the military left Mare Island that was pretty much a nail in the coffin for the Valley Joe imo, that place will never improve to the point of it being desirable.

I love my house in Vallejo!
I bought here over a year ago in the Heritage District - my 100 yr old craftsman needs work but little by little - has a garage & a wonderful patio & back yard- orange tree & roses. So it all depends on what you like - I would not live in a suburban house because it doesn't appeal to me. I have no problem with crime here but I don't go out much & all us neighbors stick together & watch out for each other.
I have had no crime but then I lived in north oakland for 5 yrs & my truck was broken into more than enough & all the other urban garbage that comes along with any city almost. it is all relative isn't it.
Check it out - see what you think
