Moving to Sonoma County...help appreciated..
Hello all...I am currently making plans to move up to Sonoma County from SoCal within the year. I registered on this site to hopefully get some insider help in finding a place to live and any other helpful information. I am interested in finding a home/cottage/duplex or something along those lines to rent long term, preferably in Guerneville/Russian River area or Santa Rosa area, Guerneville being most desirable. I am not interested in living in an apartment complex or other more commercial type place which is why I am inquiring on this site as opposed to just going to rent.com, etc. I am looking for small local property management firms or private renters in those areas and I am having some difficulty finding them doing an internet search. If anyone could give me some leads on where to look or some names and numbers or any advice for that matter, I would greatly appreciate it. It will just be me and my 2 cats so I am specifically looking for a small one bedroom or even a nice sized studio cottage would be fine. Thank you very much to all!!!!

I would try craigslist -- for San Francisco -- in the real estate or apartment search section search for Russian River or where ever....
Good Luck!

You should also check out the local paper in Santa Rosa, the Press Democrat. Their website should help.

Yes, the northbay Craigslist is one of the best resources: craigslist: north bay classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events
Also check out in the Guerneville/Russian River area:

I grew up in Sonoma County and have lived in Penngrove, Cotati, Santa Rosa, and now live in Guerneville. I love it here!! Forestville or Graton are nice because they are near the Russian River, but closer to Santa Rosa than Guerneville, Monte Rio, Rio Nido, etc., so it makes the drive to town a little quicker for shopping or whatever. Sebastopol is also nice, a very "green" conscious town. Good luck on your search!!

The commute from Guerneville to Santa Rosa is not an easy one. A few lonely little two lane roads, often congested at rush hour, and full of crazy drunks late at night. A good hour or more. Terrifically dangerous at times. Once you get past Sebastapol, it's pretty much a no-man's land. And the river areas FLOOD at least every three or four years, guaranteed. I mean a complete wipeout-- the whole town's inundated with water.
But, quite nice....

To add, there are some "different" people out there. And I'm trying to put that in the most PC way. They are very nice, but some have different ways of life.
The flooding is as bad. And there aren't too many alternative routes in the RR area. IIRC, it's a one way in & out for the most part. Not to mention, alot of the homes out there are not very sturdy due to the amount of rain & mud.
Santa Rosa is nice, but also contested most of the time. Especially with the 101 construction & the 12 on/off ramps.

any realty company in Guerneville should be able to get you a list of current rentals
and a flood map. bring wet suits and your kayak , you should have a good time. teach your cats to swim...

I grew up in Sonoma County and lived in Santa Rosa for school last semester. I'm in Madrid now and can't wait to be home in five weeks! Beautiful Northern California...
A bit redundant here I know, but definitely give Craigslist a go. When I was apartment hunting in SR, I was always getting excited seeing some really charming, cosy little cottage at a startlingly low price... and then realizing it was in fact in Guerneville or Forestville.
Good luck :-)

Very true! I lived in the Russian River area for 20 years myself......the road can be very dangerous after dark and yes, a LOT of drunks. It's quite a commute into Santa Rosa. The road floods out in several places well before you even get near Guerneville, and barely out of Santa Rosa.
Another thing to look for in housing is the mold. "Many" places have mold simply due to so much moisture which can be VERY bad for someone with allergies.
Try to find someplace that isn't in a canyon or sunshine will be at a minimum.
