Moving to Vallejo
I may be moving to Vallejo with my husband and we would like to know some good areas to own a home start a family. I am aware that Vallejo has some pretty shady areas, but I want an affordable home and I will be working there as well. Can anyone give me some decent neighborhoods? Thanks.

stay clear of "The Crest" area (near Marine World Amusement Park). We are on the otherside of I-80 (near Costco area) and are renting. Where are you going to work, moving from and interests?

Re: moving to vallejo
My husband and I currently work in San Rafael, I am an RN and would be transferring to the Vallejo Kaiser Hospital. My husband would probably commute to San Rafael until he finds work in Vallejo or that area. We enjoy eating out at good restaurants and would be happy with an affordable home (maybe a fixer upper) for less than $500,000 as long as its a decent neighborhood since we would like to have children soon. I appreciate your response. Thanks.

Vallejo
Up near Target off of Admiral Callaghan Lane are some nice townhomes called the Tiara. There are also some nice homes in that area. I'm not sure what the area is called but it's up near Costco and Home Depot.

An understatement. 15 years ago Vallejo had some shady areas, now they are beyond shady and quite dangerous due to drug trafficking and petty crime. Holding up Safeway with no escape route in broad daylight kind of crimes. The decent neighborhoods are shrinking yearly and freeway traffic is horrendous - always bottlenecked weekdays, weeknights and weekends - at all hours unless you leave for work at 3:33 am. Maybe you would not be impacted by the traffic if you actually live and work in Vallejo. I wouldn't live in Vallejo if I had other choices. Sorry to paint such a negative portrait, but it's not a very sweet place to live in my opinion. I used to live there for 3 minutes and moved because I could see the writing on the wall that it was falling apart. Everyone I know who used to live there and got a sweet housing deal, particularly with growing families, no longer lives there and got the hell out. Proceed with caution.

Robert, you would probably want to rent outside of Vallejo, especially if you have children, such as in American Canyon or in Benicia. American Canyon would most likely be less expensive compared to Benicia, but I am not sure. Try Craigslist.org for listings. Of course, Benicia schools are a lot better when compared to those in American Canyon, but the schools in American Canyon are not too bad either. Both cities' school districts are definitely way better than Vallejo's district.
Even if you do not have children, the crime in Vallejo is enough to stay away from if you plan to live there.

There is NO such thing as a good area in Vallejo. If you have kids and want to keep them safe DO NOT move there. Look at AC or Benicia.
