What is "foolish" in your view, about going into Afghanistan after 9/11?

I have family in an area of PA that doesn't have a lot of career options for people. You can be a farmer or sell farm equipment or sell farm insurance...
The military is a viable career option there, and a lot of my cousins joined up right after high school. A couple of them just retired after 20 some years and amazingly enough find work as civilians in military based jobs.
And we're not talking just computer and battle things -- one of my cousins found his dream as a cook. He traveled all over the world cooking for the Navy.
I think it's easier to dislike recruitment where it seems kids can do anything -- like out here in good schools. But the military is still a good way to go for a lot of kids. It gives them a discipline they didn't get at home.

How on earth can you ask than when you see the sucking pit of despair the situation has become? What makes us think that we can win this war? What makes us believe that we are doing ourselves or the Afghans any good by being there? Yes, we threw down the Taliban, but they are back in numbers (and in Iraq too).
We learned nothing from the Soviet experience there.

great points and there isn't a lot of work in Arcata either. I agree, often the military is a wonderful opportunity for these young people. Sure, there will be some that will regret the decision and are stuck for at least a few years, but many are able to build a future plus serve their country. good for your family and God Bless everyone of them.

So basically the gist of your argument is that we should basically just throw up our hands and turn tail and leave the situation as is? You think thats a viable alternative?
In other words you (and most liberals) don't have any answers or solutions.
Just what I thought.
Thanks.

Just responding to your ORIGINAL question "what was so foolish about going into Afghanistan after 9-11".
To reiterate: We NEVER should have gone in in the first place. It was completely foolish.
Now that we are there the situation is more complicated. We can't just pull out but we are not going to be able to win militarily either.
You should read the book "Three Cups of Tea" for more perspective (and potential solutions).

The only book that's needed here is the book of "common sense".
Probably a book you need to read yourself.
Your idea that going into Afghanistan was "foolish" is one of the most idiotic things I've heard all day. Probably all week. And I surf the internet daily looking for stupid stuff.
You would prefer we just sit on our hands while the situation with the taliban and al qaeda continued to go about their business as usual? Thank god you don't run foreign policy. We'd be doomed.
How many terror attacks occured in America post-9/11?
Thats right: 0
