Default Alcatraz & College - safe?

Hi,

How's the area around Alcatraz & College Ave? How's the parking situation? Is it safe for a single female to walk home from Ashby or Rockridge station at 11pm?

Thanks.

I love that neighborhood, and would definitely feel safe as a single female walking there (and have friends who do just that). Personally I would rather make the walk from the Rockridge station at that hour since there are many more people along that route at night, but I used to live a bit north of there and did the Ashby walk many a night as well with no problems.

Parking, on the other hand, is not fun in that neighborhood (and traffic at rush hour is horrific---you can sometimes walk faster!) I think there are permits available for daytime parking depending on whether you're on the Oakland or Berkeley side of the line (maybe even both?) for street parking, though.

Permits on Berkeley side for sure, for Oakland you need a permit for part of Alcatraz and the one block north of it still in city limits. South of Alcatraz at like 63rd, theres no permit needed, but you might need to drive around the block a bit to find a spot at night. Nothing ever happened to my car or me when I was there, except a street sweeper ticket or two. I love the neighborhood as well, for the convenience to restaurants and shops, and the treelined streets with cute houses.
