I don't know if I'll help much, but I can tell you that my grandma lives in Concord close to the Walnut Creek line, and it seems like a good area. I don't know how long the commute to San Francisco is, but I know that BART goes there and I think it's usually pretty good. I could be wrong...just what I've heard here and there.

Aside from the rundown apartments near Detroit and Monument, Concord is your typical clean, safe and boring suburb. I personally wouldnt want to deal with rush hour traffic to and from the city, but I know people who do so regularly. BART is reliable and takes about 45 minutes to downtown sf, though parking does fill up early and its not that cheap (~$10 roundtrip). The nicer homes and schools tend to be closer to Clayton town and further from the freeways.

I grew up in Concord and there are still nice areas . they are a little ways from the bart stations . concord is riddled with Meth and has been for a long time. YOU would be better of in Walnut Creek, Lafayette,. I would stay out of contra costa county but thats just my opinion.

IMO Concord is Ugly, Boring and Hot. It reminds me of Nevada or Arizona. The commute from Concord to SF is a nightmare. Take BART, never drive it could take you 2 hours on most days.

I'd choose Walnut creek over Concord and Lafayette over Walnut creek.
