Oakland seems to have twice as many neighborhoods listed on Zillow too, and quite a few hoods are missing from SF's list, so I'm not gonna include median incomes because it doesn't really compare right. Anyways, here are the SF hoods with murders in 2008 and 2009:
Hunters Point 18 in 2008/ 3 in 2009
Visitacion Valley 7 in 2008/ 1 in 2009
Portola 1 in 2008
Excelsior 6 in 2008/ 2 in 2009
Mission Terrace 2 in 2008/ 1 in 2009
Glen park 1 in 2008
Bernal heights 1 in 2008
Ingleside 1 in 2008
Oceanview 1 in 2008
Cayuga/Outer Mission 2 in 2008
Dogpatch/Central Waterfront 1 in 2008
Mission Bay 2 in 2008
Potrero Hill 5 in 2008/ 1 in 2009
Mission District 21 in 2008
Tenderloin 9 in 2008/ 3 in 2009
Hayes Valley 1 in 2008
Fillmore 7 in 2008/ 3 in 2009
Panhandle/Lone Mountain 2 in 2008
Golden Gate Park 1 in 2008
Richmond District 1 in 2008/ 1 in 2009
Ocean Beach 1 in 2008
Sunset District 4 in 2008
Russian Hill 1 in 2008 (justified)
North Beach 1 in 2008
Financial District 2 in 2008
We've had a huge drop in the homicide rate so far this year. Only 17 homicides in SF so far in '09, as opposed to 48 at this time last year.

Holy crap, only 17?? That's a huuuuge drop! Good, its about freakin time! I'm glad Oakland seems to be calming down a lot too.
Hopefully things will continue to improve!

I consider Dimond to be a very nice area. There are yuppie bakeries and organic grocers, sushi etc. I wonder if any Oaklander would care to offer up a reason for Dimond cause I can't figure it out.
Its as if 580 stands as a reservoir or something. Everynow and then, murders splash over to the other side of the freeway like water splashing over the wall of an overflowing dam. In Dimond's case, all of its homicides are like a block from 580.

Dimond Park area has been slowly transitioning along with Fruitvale. Yes, it's definitely much better than it used to be but it still has a ways to go. It may be hard for some to believe, but the improvement in Fruitvale is amazing. It's still a bit gritty but I now see a thriving area with lot's of small business and Mom & Pop outfits. Not all that long ago it was called "The Zone" with a liquor store on every corner and at least one prostitute and drug dealer in between. Ok, I may be exaggerating a bit but the Fruitvale was a pretty bad place to be less than 20 years ago. My inlaws live there and the improvement is really noticable. Dimond was only slightly better than Fruitvale but it too has improved at about the same rate. It still has some problems though. Even with the improvements neither area would be my first choice but one could do a lot worse.

Im a big fan of the mom n pop stores and family taquerias, but fruitvale village is a joke. it doesnt fit in with the neighborhood, it attracts Moderator cut: Offensive language, and the businesses within dont look like theyre doing that well. Instead of building a mall they should help people trying to open businesses with loans, grants, etc.

I've wondered that myself... at one time I know the Oakland Housing Authority used 35th Ave as the demarcation line. It's the only time I had seen it used by a government agency.
So Laurel would definitely be East and Dimond Central?
Anyone know for sure? People have said the Oakland Zoo/Knowland Park is East Oakland and others say it isn't because it's above the 580 freeway
Using compass points adds to the confusion because I think Brookfield Village is considered East Oakland by just about everyone and yet is more South than East???
**Update**
I just read on the link below that East Oakland starts at 1st Avenue and goes to 109th Avenue

Yes, that's my understanding, and it surprised me too because that seems to include such desirable areas as Ivy Hill, Glenwood, Redwood Heights.. the gangstas come up with other names like "Murder Dubbs" or "DEO" for the notorious crime hot-spots.

I love those mom-n-pops.
Agree about Fruitvale Village being out of place, but I do think its an improvement over what was there before.
That Pedestrian walkway between the station and E.14th provides a great opportunity for some kind of increased retail...dunno what tho. I personally wouldnt mind a Santee Alley(in LA) type development there.

4 in the Sunset in '08. Would be interesting to know if it was in the Outermost Sunset, the only somewhat gritty part. Or was it just a random anomaly.

They were mostly all right around the edge of the inner sunset. Two were killed in a double shooting at 19th and Irving, one guy was shot to death in his car at 17th and Noriega, and another guy was stabbed to death by his bother at 28th and Lawton. There were 4 homicides in the Sunset in 2007 too.

Sorry to hear that man. That shooting happened just a couple blocks from my girlfriend's house, and I remember walking by the scene the next day and seeing flowers all over the sidewalk and stuff. Two people killed, and all over some stupid pizza at that.

Yeah man that was some BS. He was married and a father of three with his life on the right track and some punk just did him and his co-worker dirty. But what can you do? I'm just glad that freak occurrences like that aren't really all that common. They do happen way too often tho.
