My wife and I used to live quite close to there. Literally 4 blocks away. Sad.

always refered to everything from the avenues down to San leandro, from the water to the hills/Castro Valley East Oakland.

So Laurel would definitely be East and Dimond Central?
Anyone know for sure? People have said the Oakland Zoo/Knowland Park is East Oakland and others say it isn't because it's above the 580 freeway
Using compass points adds to the confusion because I think Brookfield Village is considered East Oakland by just about everyone and yet is more South than East???
**Update**
I just read on the link below that East Oakland starts at 1st Avenue and goes to 109th Avenue

Knowland Park -- East Oakland
Redwood - East Oakland
Grass Valley - East Oakland
Malcolm/Golf Course - East Oakland
Mills College - East Oakland
Merrit College/Skyline - East Oakland
Brookfield - East Oakland.
We don't refer to anything as "South Oakland" so those places fall under the East Oakland umbrella also.

I think that's were the problem lies... I always said I live in East Oakland and have been corrected countless times by people inside and outside Oakland that where I live isn't East Oakland
I would think people would know that I would know where I live
Don't forget Sheffield Village... it's Oakland for all those that swear it's San Leandro

Forgot that one. Yes, that too is Oakland. EAST Oakland.
I don't know where you live, but I used to hear that also. Oh, you live in the "hills", that's not really East Oakland.
Hunh???? Last time I checked (insert your area here) was firmsly in East Oakland. And so are all the other places we've mentioned. ;-)

That's got to be the understatement of the century!
As I said, Though the Fruitvale is still not the pace I'd choose to raise a family, it beats the West Coast's version of Detroit any day. People looking at the Fruitvale today without having seen what it was 20 years ago wouldn't be impressed but when you compare what it was to what it is now, it seems like two different worlds with the more recent version being a big improvement.

I took a drive this morning, I would start East Oakland around 14th or 22nd Ave. ;-)

Thanks, but that's not what I'm talking about. I have no idea what or where funktown is.
