This is not the first time this issue has been raised in Oakland. Chip Johnson as usual is trying to act like he's exposing a smoking gun in Oakland.
As far as the possibility of filing Bankruptcy, $212 Million for OPD equals $256,000 per officer. That is outrageous even for a city with a crime rate like Oakland's.

It is past time for the powers to be to grow up and starting cutting services----------especially for illegal aliens.
Otherwise; we may be in a situation similar to 1930's Europe

Yeap, I agree they need to start cutting services and reducing salaries. It really bothers me that the first place Oakland talks about cutting is the police force. Which is just a cry for more money they will just end up spending. It is also troubling how politicians can single handily cripple a city.

Having been away from the Bay for 5 year or so, what really bugs me is Oakland's city Council.
Nadel, Brunner, Reid, DeLaFuente and Russo(in one form or another) have been on the coucil for a good 10-15 years? After attending and watching council meetings for years, it just seems like they need to move on.

Well, and in fairness, while I think bankruptcy is a pretty extreme solution, one reason cities consider it in the first place is that it opens up certain doors as far as balancing budgets (specifically around modifying or terminating existing contracts or labor agreements that may be necessary in order to cut services or reduce salaries) that are otherwise closed. Personally I think the broader impact (reputation as a "bankrupt city," e.g., Vallejo) far outweighs any benefits, but I can understand where the Council is coming from.

Politics as usual... only the numbers are bigger today
Remember when Oakland sold City Hall and agreed to lease it back?

To be fair I don't think 212 million is just for salaries -- I would bet it's the whole operating budget which would include power and water down to TP and paper towels of many buildings.
