Mill Valley is very charming and closer to SF. Check this place for the time you need to rent. Harbor Point Apartments Apartments in Mill Valley, CA 94941 - Apartment Directions
It's great for small families...you can use the tennis club facilities, the location is stunning, school district is one of the best and you can get the Ferry Boat from Tiburon to SF. Good luck with your move!

Mill Valley is a posh, liberal Marin town, minutes to the City
In less than 10 minutes you can drive from Mill Valley to the Golden Gate Bridge and another 10 minutes to the Financial District in San Francisco. Another option is to hop on your bicycle, literally pedal just 5 minutes to either Sausalito, Tiburon or Larkspur to catch a beautiful and even relaxing (yes, a commute that is lovely!) 30 minute ferry ride across the bay to San Francisco's Ferry Building, dropping you directly into the Financial District. I would move to Mill Valley tomorrow if I could afford it. Extraordinary housing costs are the only drawback to that community.

Thank you for your response. It's hard when you are trying to find places on the west coast when you are still on the east coast. We will definitely be checking out Mill Valley. We'll be renting to begin with until we are sure of the area.

I'm trying to get information on life in mill valley. I'm 32, moving from los angeles, will be working in the financial district, and living with my girlfriend. We are still young in that we like to go to bars on weekends and not be in bed by 10pm. that being said, i'd like a quiet oasis to come home to and not sure i want to live in sf proper. I currently living in hermosa beach in LA and love the laid back vibe, but proximity to the excitement of the city of los angeles. Would Mill Valley (or Sausalito) be a place that would fit my palate? Also, is the weather much warmer in Mill Valley compared to Sausalito?

Golden Gate Transit runs very frequent commute buses from Mill Valley to SF financial district on route #4. The buses are very comfortable, with reclining seats and reading lights, and none of the colorful passengers that you encounter on San Francisco Muni buses - financial district riders usually thank the driver as they are exiting the bus and sit quietly reading or working on their laptop. You don't want to drive very often to the financial district as parking is VERY expensive and the bridge toll is $6.
Many employers offer tax advantaged commuter checks to help pay the fare.
Poster above optimistically estimated time to ride a bicycle from MV to the Sausalito ferry as 5 minutes. More like 15, depending on where in MV you are riding from. It is a nice ride along the bike path.

You may also want to consider the communities of Lafayette and Orinda. These are very upscale east bay neighborhoods w/ the top schools in the country. Both area highschools were just ranked in the top 100 in the country by US News and World Report. The schools in Danville are also top notch, but you will be an hour commute from the city and Danville has no bart station. Both Orinda and Lafayette have BART train stations putting you into the FIDI in 25 min. It is also expensive housing, but you will get a slightly bigger house in Orinda or Lafayette for the same price in Mill Valley, and the schools are better.
