Some parts in the Inner Mission (ghetto mixed in with gentrification and bars/clubs), Marina (yuppie neighborhood), and parts in the South of Market area all have some nice places to party.

The Mission District, Haight Ashbury, and the Castro are the areas that come to mind. The Mission District is has alot of hispanic people and artists. Great mexican food and alot of bars and clubs. Crime is a problem in this area (gangs, murders, drugs ect. ) but it's not one of those areas where your gonna get robbed and beat down if you look like you don't belong because there is so much diversity in that area that almost anybody looks like they could be from there. The Haight Ashbury area was the hippie neighboorhood in the 60's and its got alot of bars, clubs and restaurants as well. There are alot of gutter punks and junkies that live on the street there but you can just ignore them. The Castro has alot of bars and clubs and has a huge street party every halloween. It's the gay area so if by dating you were refering to members of the opposite sex, this area is not for you; if your gay then you should feel right at home. You might want to check out North Beach and SOMA as well. I would personally choose the Mission, or one of the surrounding neighboorhoods such as Portrero Hill or Bernal Heights and just take a cab or bus into the Mission when you go out.
