Is Marin City Sausalito's Evil Twin?
What is the deal here? Isn't Marin City actually a part of the city of Sausalito, as opposed to a real independent city? By crossing under one freeway overpass, am I taking my life in my hands? Does Marin City get a bad rap? Just curious.

Evil twin is just a little harsh... Marin City is actually unincorporated and therefore under the jurisdiction of the county. I'm pretty sure it shares the same school district as Sausalito though. It has a separate identity and history, but its by no means evil or overly dangerous. It began as housing for workers in the shipyards during WWII, and with segregation and so on, it has remained the only area in Marin with a significant African-American population. Due to its relative isolation and proximity to tony towns like Mill Valley, it has been ghettoized and unfairly castigated by many. It went through a lot of redevelopment in the late 90s, with new affordable housing and the addition of chain stores near the freeway.

Marin City is the hood, just like any other in the bay area. The difference is Marin City is quite small and many of its residents related so there are not many murders like other ghettos.

^^ Tho it is best not to go into Marin City from out of town, that is usually when things can get real ugly out there.

The reason I ask is that I just started working there, and it looks alright to me. It just seems like people in the rest of Marin kind of gasp when you mention it!

That is because there is a lot of violent crime in Marin City. I would suggest staying away from the 200 block of Drake Avenue and Mos Def away from Cole as that is where a Street Gang called the Young Hawgz operates and sells crack. Marin City is different than most ghettos in that it is much smaller a community. There is no reason to go there really, locals will know an outsider when they see one. Just a couple years ago a drug dealer from Richmond was murdered in Marin City. About a week or so ago 2 young teens attempted to execute a man who was entering his house and shot him in the back. Over the last year there have been about 30 armed robberies of bus passengers in the Marin City aka the Jungle in which a couple of times they have beaten the victims severly. Back in March a 19 year old male was arrested after attempting to shoot a sheriff from his bedroom window..he missed but hit the car. He was carraying a weapon upon arrest.

the nicest "projects" i've ever seen
very small, tight knit community, and there is no reason for an outsider to go there

I never imagined Marin to have such a violent community! I guess my stay in Novato really sheltered me, lol.
