Default What's close to Yosemite

We've decided to go to Yosemite this weekend. Yeah, we don't like planning ahead much. ;p

But, looking for suggestions from anyone on where to look for lodging without paying 300 a night. Do you think Fresno is too far? Other suggestions from folks in the Bay that might have done this in the past?

TIA!!

Not sure if they'd be booked or not but we love this place...

Yosemite Bug - Rustic Mountain Resort - Cabins, Restaurant, Health Spa, Hostel

It's been a while since I've been, but they have an excellent cafe/restaurant on the premises.

Merced might be a little closer to Yosemite than Fresno. Plenty of motels along Hwy 99. It might take an hour or 90 minutes to get to Yosemite.

Yosemite will be crowded on July 4th weekend and you'll probably not find any available lodging in or near the park.

We tried that once and had to drive for a while out of the park to find something. Quite rustic -- and the water? Undrinkable. Smelled of sulfur. Take your own..

Try Mariposa, it's south east of the park and has lots of motels and I believe a shuttle bus that runs into the valley and back so you can leave your car.

Mariposa County CVB : Mariposa CA and Yosemite Park Travel Information

The park will be packed so watch your valuables like camera, etc.

Or drive through Calaveras County and Tuolumne County on your way to Yosemite. If you're in the North part of the bay area anyway, you can come out highway 4 to Angels Camp, through Sonora, and on up to Yosemite on Highway 120.
