If you work in the City I'd consider Burlingame first, then Palo Alto. Drive to the Cal-Train station, and commute in that way.
Both towns are yup/rich with enough street urchins to make it "feel" urban-hip-compassionate.
Both Burlingame and Palo Alto have good schools.
If you're going to work in the City living in the East Bay or Marin will mean driving or taking a boat....

...oh...and the commute (auto) times quoted here in the other posts...that's based on little to no traffic....
as soon as some knuckle head jack-knifes a semi or rear-ends someone....you can expect a LONG wait....

You must have money, Seacliff starts around $8 million, Marin County near SF is almost that high and the commute is bad by car. Even Sunset will run a million for a row house. Commute is no problem in the City, take MUNI. Try Mare Island, Vallejo. Housing has gone down 60% and you can take the ferry to downtown.
